Random system crashes w/ HD clicking, Boot problems

I am having random crashes in Windows and Fedora Core 5, which consist of a completely frozen screen, BSOD, or blank screen. When this happens, I often notice that my system hard drive makes a strange noise. I don't think it's the hard drive however, because this is happening with several different drives.
I am using a MSI K7-D (6501) with 2x Athlon 1800
SCSI Controller is a Adaptec 39160
Two Seagate ST318451/2LW, seperate channels & cables with external termination
several IDE drives

When booting linux, the startup process begins, then freezes, somtimes at checking kernal, sometimes shortly after
Windows will freeze on the color loading screen, or earlier
Both of these are accompanied by changes in the sound of the hard drive. I disconnected all other drives to make sure, and every time it is the system drive, despite switching between three different drives (scsi, scsi, and ide, running linux, windows, and windows)

I've tried messing with termination settings on the SCSI drives, and I can generally read them from a Knoppix boot. The crashes seem random, occaisionally the system manages to boot, but will crash shortly afterwards, sometimes it will crash as soon as the OS starts loading. The adaptor sees the drives, and I can do a "Verify Media" on both SCSI drives without showing any errors. The IDE drive crashes on boot too, but I'm not sure if this is the same issue. It would be very strange for something to cause problems with both the SCSI and IDE systems, considering the computer is otherwise working fine (I'm in Knoppix now), although it's possible.

Anyone have any suggestions? I think I've got things set up properly, but it's still not working. Despite an occaision successful boot, I can't run anything : /

Ok, I have the system booted off an IDE drive, and everything seems to be running fine. So, this indicates that it's some problem with my SCSI drives/controller, or I guess the motherboard. Any ideas on how to figure out what the problem is exactly? Like I said, I don't think it's that the drives are defective, as I've swapped between 3 different drives and have the same problem with each.

Since it seems you have a large number of drives, i would either test, or swap out your power supply, I was running a system with 5 drives and two plugs from the power supply began to fail, and my drives would start to freeze up occasionally and start clicking. I then disconnected a few drives and found the bad rails, so out went the bad power supply and in with a more powerful one.
