Random shutdowns during boot, regular use, and gameplay

My friend's computer is experiencing some shutdown issues, which initially began during games like Borderlands and Team Fortress 2 and now occur randomly during normal use. He's also experienced freezing during boot. It only started happening this summer even though he's had the computer for about a year and a half.

Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz
G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3750640AS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
MSI X58 Platinum LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX
2x SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V

I have noticed his temperatures were ridiculously high during idle and during load (idle CPU temps were and still are 60+C and the GPUs seem to idle at 60+C). We've cleaned out the fans and reapplied Arctic Silver 5 to the CPU, but it hasn't seemed to have changed anything. Reinstalling Win7 hasn't seemed to solve anything (done just in case it happened to be a software issue).

To see if it was the RAM, we ran Memtest86+, but it kept freezing randomly within three or so minutes... well, not "frozen" but the percentages wouldn't change, even if we just left it for thirty minutes. We then disconnected everything except one video card, the RAM, PSU, CPU, and disabled everything in the BIOS except the USB for Memtest86+, and tested each stick of RAM individually. Several hours on each seem to have been OK (no errors), so we're at a loss.

We're going to try using my old desktop's PSU (a 500W should be enough for ONE 4850 and the rest of the stuff, right?) to see if it's the PSU... but it never shut down randomly during Memtest86+ so we don't know if this is going to be for nothing.

Also, during his motherboard manufacturer logo that comes on when you first boot the computer doesn't appear until several seconds after boot; shouldn't it always come up immediately?

And also, it also seems to occasionally boot, then act as if it's shutting down (fans decrease severely in speed) and then start up again, with nothing appearing on the screen.

Any ideas? Sorry if I'm not following some kind of rule or etiquette of the forums; this is my first post here.

Welcome to the forums, and don't worry, no issue with your post. ;)

From your problem description two things jump out as possible culprits. One is heat and the other is the power supply. Your idle temps are very high, my q6600 is OCd and basic mutlitasking keeps me in the low 30s. His case sounds like it could use some airflow. With all those components if there are no fans to exhaust the heat, all the arctic silver in the world won't help. You can try taking the side panel off and pointing a desk fan into the case and see if that helps the temps.

The other thing that jumps out is the power supply. It's possible it could be dying or that the stress from the heat is making it's efficiency drop. I've read that the hotter the ambient temp the less efficient they are. I would say it's definitely worth the effort to swap out the power supplies and test it out.
