Random Shut Downs

I just got this HP laptop from a friend, and it's been randomly shutting down on me. I know it's not a software problem because I re-formatted and it still happened.

Actually, it didn't do it to me once during the reformat, but once WinXP Home (with a bunch of HP crap bundled into it) was installed and began to boot, it would randomly shut down a few times then sometimes it would act fine.

What happens during the shutdown is it flashes me the blue screen of death for a second or two (not long enough to read anything), then begins to reboot. It'll do this several times until it finally runs stable, but it all just seems very random. Each time it'll "choose" different points of the booting process to decide to go ahead and reboot.

So I was pretty sure it was a hardware problem until I started typing this post and remembered it didn't happen to me when I was re-formatting so now I'm not so sure. I'll post this in the OS forum also just in case.

Any suggestions I should check?

Oh yeah... Those HP bundled disks also came with a hardware diags tool that I ran and checked everything out fine, but I was still a little skeptical, seeing how it's from HP.
