Hey guys. Im completely new to the boards here and I am also a bit of a noob with gaming PCs. Im a car guy, I could rebuild an engine before diagnosing whats wrong with my computer and not wasting money.

My setup: Built July 2010

MSI NF980 G65
AMD Phenom II 4x Deneb Black Edition (not OC)
2x MSI Nvidia 550 TwinFrozr OC 1GB (running SLI) <--They were solid cards at the time and it ran SC2/WoW at 70+ FPS back then on Extreme settings
4x 2GB Corsair 1333Mhz XMS3 9-9-9-24
1x SATA 1TB 5400 RPM HDD (I need an SSD T-T)
Apevia ATX 680W PSU
6x 120mm Cooler Master fans (Better safe then sorry with cooling)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

(am I forgetting anything :\)

It would hardly slow down on SC2 on Extreme settings during the most hectic of battles. But now I got BF4 for it because my xbox is sold. Finally downloaded it and started playing. Got about 10 minutes into the story and it seemed to struggle a little at first but then smoothed out. Unexpectedly it shut down everything. I turned it back on and tried playing online. Well the screen started flashing green around the edges and over every texture on my screen. I minimized it and I went on youtube and SC2, nothing, BF4 seizure city! Then I shut it down tore it apart to inspect the cards and its not that dusty inside even though I will clean it out. It wasnt overheating too my knowledge as the MSI afterburner program showed the cards at mid 40C. The CPU heatsink was warm and the cards were warm to the touch along with the RAM sticks. The PSU was cold.

How appropriate is this setup for BF4? Is my PSU dead? What brand PSU should I buy? What should I upgrade for 2015? I am not a hardcore gamer who strives for Ultra graphics and I really only play SC2 and BF4.

Parts I have been looking to upgrade and not sure if I should upgrade them.

CPU:
AMD Phenom ii x6 1100T Black Edition

RAM:
2x 4GB Ripjaw 2133Mhz (I can OC my motherboard to accept them)

GPU:
???

Your PSU is crap quality, and your SLIed video cards are not even as fast as a decent mid-range single card.

Consider replacing both of them.

Good PSUs include Antec, SeaSonic, Corsair, FSP, Enermax, and EVGA. You can get an EVGA 500W for $40 fairly often, with two 6-pin PCI-E connectors. Try that first, it should run your SLI setup, I think. If not, consider an Antec ECO 620W (which I believe is a SeaSonic OEM).

Edit: I wouldn't bother replacing the RAM unless it's flaky. You won't notice much difference between 1333 and 2133 RAM, maybe 3% framerate increase, if that.

The symptoms your describe sound like it's your video cards and/or power supply. Like Larry said, even 2 of those old cards would be slower than a single GTX 960 today.

Get a good quality power supply 500Watt+ and at least a GTX 960 4GB (or AMD equivalent) and you should be good to go.

BF4 is MUCH more GPU intensive than SC2 or WoW which would explain the funky green dots and artifacting.

PCI-E 2.0 is not any sort of limit at all, actually.

Modern cards will run just fine in 2.0 slots with no performance loss.

Yes, you can put a newer 3.0 into an older 2.0 slot and it'll work fine. Unless you plan on buying an ultra high end video card there won't be a bottleneck. (except the cpu maybe).

Just to third this, a 960 and a quality 500 - 600-watt PSU would be a great upgrade for you here.
