I have had a problem with my system for some time now with freeze-ups/ lockups.System is:
P3-600e@800mhz fcpga w/ golden orb
Soyo 6BA+4
128mb pc133 Mushkin HSDRAM
IBM 20gig 7200 hd
Creative Geforce DDR
Soundblaster Live X-Gamer
Intel 10/100 nic
Antec case and Antec 300w ps
4 80mm fans- 2 intake, 2 exhaust
several clean installs of Win98 se (no help)

These freeze-ups occur randomly. Sometimes during web browsing, playing games, occasionaly during startup just as it is going into Windows. I had upped the V core voltage to 1.75 from the default 1.65 in the bios but it still was doing it. I wasn't sure if I was getting a true 1.75, it showed it in the bios, as I use an Iwill sloket II and I had not changed the jumpers on it to the 1.75v config. I did that yesterday but the lockup happened again tonight. The only way out of the freezeups/ lockups is a press of thr reset button as esc and ctrl-alt-del do nothing. Any ideas on this?

What are your temperatures? My system was doing exactly the same thing, and I finally tracked it down to overheating... If possible, I'd recommend getting a better HSF, as the Orbs just don't seem to be able to provide enough cooling with most overclocked systems.

Can this be caused by an HD problem? I have the same type of lockups both when using a BM6/Celeron 550, and a CUSL2/Celeron 900. I am suspecting my maxtor but cant confirm if its my overclocked CPU (which i dont really think so... 14 hours of RC5 and no lockups), or my HD.

Temperatures as reported in my bios are as follows:
System temp:29c/84f
CPU Temp:33c/91f
This is only after the system has been on a short while

are u sure the cpu temps are correct? I have a celeron 900 and alpha PAL, and my cpu temp at idle is 10-11 degrees C above ambient motherboard temps...

Power Supply might not be able to handle the load.
Or it's semi-defective

BTW: THe temperatures sound right, if they are accurate.

4 degrees above ambient at idle? Mine is 10-11.... are my numbers bad then? Im at 19C above ambient at full load (distributed computing cracking)... This is a celeron 600@900...

And, is there anyway to determine what causes lockups? I dont know if its my HD, Power supply, or CPU (doubt its my CPU thou... i dont get lockups on CPU only intensive programs)

I just repaired 2 systems using Soyo 6SY mobos with the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. After a lot of work, it turned out to be the slotket in BOTH systems. I replaced the jumper based slotket with Gigabyte GA-6R7 jumperless slotket and set the cpu voltage in BIOS...PROBLEMS FIXED. The cpu is not getting the correct voltage to it!

Hope this helps you.

Have you tried backing off from 800? My 600E did the same thing at 800, until I put some good ram in, which I see you already have. Maybe just a little high for your proc.
