Good Afternoon,
I had a custom build done about 2 1/2 years ago, and have had a few issues with the power supply. Here are the original specs:
Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS3R
Proc: Intel Quad-Core Q6600
Video: XFX 8800 GT 512MB Alpha Dog Ed.
PSU: OCZ700GXSSLI 700W
RAM: 4GB Crucial
HD: Western Digital 500GB
Case: Coolermaster
Now, about a year ago, the power supply went dead, and it was JUST before my warranty was to expire, so OCZ sent me another one. Turns out the replacement they sent was defective too, as when I would stand the case vertically (as the tower is normally oriented) the fan on the PSU would be touching something making a constant loud noise as it spun. I had to lay my computer on it's side to be able to use it without that happening.
Long story short, went through a heck of an ordeal with OCZ where they just wouldn't send me another replacement for the same model, but they finally sent me a "comprable" which I wasn't too thrilled about. I don't remember the exact model number right now, but it is the OCZFTY700W, basically they OCZ Fatality 700W power supply which didn't have nearly as many purchases on newegg.com.
Anyways, for the past few months my computer tends to randomly restart. I could be just browsing the web, doing nothing, or gaming, just seems pretty random. I started monitoring CPU and Video Card temps. The Video card would get up into the 90 Celsius range while playing bad company 2, so I dusted the entire computer out and temps on both the video and CPU are lower, but still seem to be getting random restarts.
Then sometimes when I get home and try to turn it on, it won't turn on right away. I have to either keep hitting the power button, or turn the switch on the PSU on then off, and just keep hitting the power button and it will randomly just come back on. For instance, last night, it wouldn't turn on no matter how many times I pushed the button, turned the power supply on and off, etc. I had to disconnect the PC, open it up and wiggle PSU connections. Then I plugged it back in and it started up.
I assumed the PSU is to blame, but really, I'm guessing it could be a fault in any component, the MOBO, RAM, CPU, dunno. XFX tech support who I spoke with last night, said any of the components could be going into a bug state and I could temporarily be fixing it by taking out the power cable and letting the capacitors drain out their power.
I went ahead and ordered a new Corsair 750 Watt PSU, a XFX 5770 1GB video card and a new monitor. I'm hoping between the PSU And the video card, this problem goes away, but I wanted to post here and see if you guys had any other suggestions and maybe some troubleshooting steps.
Thanks!
