Random resets with new graphics cards

Here are my relevant system specs:

i7 930@ stock speed
ASUS P6X58D-E
Thermaltake thoughpower 1000w PSU.

I've had an 8800 GTS in it since I got it about a year ago, haven't had any issues. I purchased 2 6950's and this is what it's doing to me:

With both cards in and crossfire enabled, my system will reset practically the very second something 3d is loaded. I saw graphics for like a split second after Vantage loaded, and Crysis will reset the second the level is loaded, no graphics. I was able to run bitcoin miners with them for a few seconds before reset.

with one card in, doesn't matter which card, games/benchmarks will load, and generally run for a bit, but eventually i still get a reset.

All my cooling seems to be fine, not getting abnormal temps with HWINFO32. At first I thought drivers might be my issue, since im switching brands, so i did a fresh windows 7 install, but no dice.

Im figuring PSU maybe? I haven't had a single issue with it before now though, and i dont think a single 6950 draws much more power than an 8800 GTS. none of the voltage readings seem off, or to fluctuate much at all. This PSU should have no problem with 2 of these things, much less 1.

Anyone got any ideas?

At a guess i would say your PSU is faulty, while it is true that you are drawing nowhere near 1000w of power if it is on it's way to the scrap yard in the sky it may not be able to handle your new GPU's.

Have you tried 1 card in both PCI-E slots to rule out a fault with one? Are you running everything off one power rail or have you split the connectors evenly? Does that mobo require an extra 4-pin molex for SLI set ups?

I have since tried the bottom 2 slots and get the same results. I have both cards on their own set of modular connectors and no the mobo doesn't require an extra 4 pin. It seems to mostly run fine with 1 card I've decided. Doesn't matter which card. I have had a couple of resets, but i was able to run furmark all night without it resetting with 1 card.

Should I RMA the PSU and mobo both? I'd hate to RMA the PSU only to have the mobo be the problem.

if it keep's reseting i would check power failure.

i had the PSU tested by a local shop, they said it was fine, the voltage numbers also dont even budge according to hwinfo.

i mean, i figure its probably the psu still, but could the mobo be doing this?

They don't budge until the graphics engage, you have a power supply that isn't able to handle the higher load of both cards, but is able to power one. Trust me, ive seen this several times.

Why would it test fine though? It's a pretty decent PSU, and should theoretically have no issue with 3 6950's.

I'm sure it's the problem, i'm just trying to figure out how i can tell for sure.
