Random resets after CPU/Video Card upgrade

Argh! I just upgraded my P4B533-E mobo from a 2.53GHz P4 to a 3.06GHz P4, and replaced an ancient Radeon 9000 card with a Radeon 9600XT. Nothing else changed.. but now, every so often, the system resets itself (even just sitting idle).

Is there some known compatibility issue with the video card and this mobo? Or am I finally pushing the limits of my generic RAM with the faster processor? I'd suspect that I messed something up when I swapped the CPU out, but I'd expect a non-boot situation then.

If I let it sit in the BIOS window (hardware monitor) it seems to be happy, it's only when I actually boot Win2K up that the sucker acts up - that's why I'm wondering if it's the RAM.

Any suggestions on where I should start looking for the problem first? Or should I just give it up and buy a new mobo (this thing IS pretty old)? All help appreciated.

Full specs, including brand & model of the RAM and the power supply, would help get the wheels turning here 🙂 Initial idea: confirm that your motherboard has the EZ Plug and the ATX12V power plug both hooked up, to maximize power delivery to the motherboard.

One other thing: if you have Hyperthreading enabled, try disabling it since Win2000 Pro doesn't officially support HT.

Memory is Kingston of some kind, PC2100, not sure of the model #, it's 2 x 512M in slots 1 and 2. On the ATX12V plug.. uhh.. erm.. I don't think I hooked that up, just the standard large PS connector and the EZ-Plug. Heh heh I think I'll open the case up and connect the ATX12V... if that fixes it, I'm going to be pretty embarassed! And also very happy.. thanks for the suggestion, I'm off to do it! 🙂

HT is disabled as well, the PS is an Enermax 480W.

Good luck and welcome to the Forums 🙂 BTW, the PC2100 could be an issue if the motherboard is trying to push it past its rated speed. You might download CPU-Z and see if the memory is doing its rated 133MHz/DDR266 speed, or if it's being overclocked by the motherboard.

Ok, the ATX12V is connected now.. we'll see if that helps! CPU-Z says the memory is clocked at 134.7MHz, that's a touch over the rating but I'd not think enough to cause problems.. I've told the BIOS to auto-detect the memory speed and adust as appropriate, no deliberate overclocking of the thing. I think I'll try firing up a bunch of programs and the DVD player and see if the box resets. Here's hoping!

And thanks again for the help! 🙂 🙂

Thanks for the help everyone! Looking good so far, no sudden resets out of the blue. You folks might have saved me the cost of a new mobo! 🙂

Ok, quick update: no random resets, but now I get the occasional process that performs a memory access violation, once in Firefox, once in taskmgr.exe, and always memory that "can't be written" at some j. random address. That seriously smells of a memory issue, so if it keeps up I'm going to pop some Crucial PC3200 into the mobo and see what happens. If it doesn't solve the issue, out goes the mobo (but at least I can re-use the RAM lol).
