I'm having a problem with a computer I just build for my girlfriend. I installed WinXP Pro on it and didn't seem to have any problems. Every once in a great while it would reboot but I only remember it happening once when the Aquarium screen saver came on. She has had the computer two weeks. Tonight we installed WinXP Plus! and tried playing Hyperbowl. Every time we played it would reboot before it got to the tenth frame, but at random times during the game. I haven't tried anything yet, tomarrow I am going to check drivers. It still has the 1001 bios that came with the board. I just noticed they have bios 1003 now. I am pretty sure that I installed all the new drivers when I build the system three weeks ago, and ran all the windows updates. Has anyone else this problem with this board, or any Nvidia built in video? BTW the power levels seem pretty steady and less than 3% out of specs at all times. Temps max cpu 124 F Case 95 F

The first thing you need to do is uncheck the "auto-reboot" option.
Right-click on My Computer and select Advanced->StartUp & Recovery.
What is happening is that XP encounters a system error (BSOD) but reboots itself because that option is selected.

Next, check your Event Log for some clues as to what is causing your system to fail.
I seriously doubt that your MB is the cause.

Thanks I'll try that today. I didn't even know that XP had that option. I guess I should have said it's my first XP system.

Well incase anyone would like to know I fixed the problem. After turning off the reboot on error I discovered what the errors were. Of course Microsoft only had these errors for Windows 2000 but it ended up being the same. The video drivers were causing a conflict. I had been allowing "Windows Update" update the video and audio drivers. When I D/L the drivers from Asus for the built in video etc everything worked fine. Of course the video drivers went from 29?? to 2720.

Peacekeeper,

A job well done!
I still don't know why 2K/XP defaults to Auto ReBoot on installation.

I wasn't the head of the student tech support at my college for nothing. I knew I could fix the problem, it's just a lot faster if someone else has had the same problem and can tell me what to do. I hate spending time trouble shooting if I can just ask someone else.

I was think the same thing, but then I thought about it. If you are running a server it is a lot better to reboot. If you have a BSOD at 5:30 right after you go home it is better to reboot then the computer be down until 9:00 the next day when you come back.

It's in the Administrative Tools menu. Then under event viewer. All the entries with red x's are what you are looking for. Yellow ! are sometimes bad but usually isn't the problem. Most problems are under the application section.
