random reboots all the time

dear all,

I have just joined this forum for the sole purpose of getting my computer fixed. Ever since I bought my new computer from atlas micro (they no longer answer the phone so i can not get tech support), it has randomly restarted at times. I reformatted and installed a few basic programs (email, dvd driver, divx drivers,) and drivers and I still get random reboots when doing random things such as browing the web. I am desperate to say the least.

My specs are as follows:

CPU AMD athlon xp2500 +D box
DDR PC 3200 512 MB 400 MHZ
MSI NFORCE2 K7n2D-L
8x/6CH/DDR400/LAN
FD Samsung 1.44 MB
HD Maxtor 120 GB u133 7200

PLease help. I'm not the best at computers so if you write instructions as easy as possible it would help. BUt at the same time, i'm not a complete computer idiot either.

Sorry for the double post, but I have tried turning off the auto restart and it still restarts and i get the BSOD.
I went to event viewer and here are the error messages:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0xbf8685fd, 0xf1e26c14, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini100203-02.dmp.

the messsages seem similar but i have no idea what they mean.thanks

hi,
do you see any errors in the event viewer? if so, what are they?
have you checked your memory? try this
are you sure that you are using the latest drivers?
are you overclocking?

the best thing to do is to try a fresh install with a minimum of hardware at stock speed and get it stable there. then add hardware and then software looking for trouble along the way.
hope this helps. post again with the answers to these. and definitely try the memtest software.
good luck

The only errors I saw in the event viewer are those that I just posted. I believe all my drivers are new. I downloaded the display driver and platform driver from nvidia's website. And i dont think i'm overclocking unless the people who set up my computer at atlas micro set it up to be overclocking but i doubt that.

I will defintely try the memtest now and get back to you

If you've formatted your drive and reinstalled everything, I'd say it's more likely a hardware issue. If you have a spare power supply, you could try starting there. It could also be intermittent power drop offs, or even a quirky mother board. Too many possibilities to narrow it down. You could try searching for the error messages on Microsoft's support site, but given what you've described, I doubt they'll have anything posted.

Good Luck!

Also try power supply. These cheaply built comp always skimp on this item. Try the Fortron FSP350-60PN, $42 shipped from newegg. Most random reboots from AMD can be traced cheap power supply. Hope this helps.

Ok, I tried the memtest and I got close to a hundred errors on test 4 and 5. Does this simply mean that my ram is bad and i need to get it replaced?

100 errors, damn! Yeah if the test said "BAD" then your RAM is most likely defective. To make sure, I'd get another stick of RAM and run the memtest again. Is it still under warranty?

Does anyone know how to create a bootable cd for memtest? because when i download the bootable cd iso from memtest website, and create a bootable cd with ahead nero, it doesn't work? I mean there is no memtest.exe 🙁 I don't know what I am doing wrong? Someone guide me? I don't have a floppy drive (never needed one).

Xiety don't choose the bootable cd option in Nero. All you have to do is select File ==> Burn Image ==> and select the memtest ISO file.

And then you might also have to go into the BIOS and change your boot sequence so that you boot first from the CD-ROM drive.

k i ll try that thanks man. but that's weird, becacause the memtest86-3.0.iso file that i downloaded from their website is actually a zip file? at least the icon is.

this could also be because of driver conflicts.....believe it or not i read somewhere where you should space out your PCI slots every other, not to put then right next to each other..this worked for me a year back when i had my old DFI board and had the same problem when XP came out

this is a true fact aswell, i dont remember wehre i read it but on most motherboards AGP and PCI 1 will share an IRQ and same thing with the last PCI and first ISA ect....give it a shot its always worth a try

i am just saying i was having the same problem as him about 14 months ago with my dfi board and i came across it after i gave up on it and tried it out.....never had a blue screen again....welll vary, vary rarely

All pci slots filled out? What ya got in them? These days and age of built-in peripherals, can't see how you can fill them all up 🙂

I have a question about my MEMTEST with 100 errors. In the end it is supposed to say "BAD"? I had run the test for over 9 hours and it was still going and i saw that there were errors so i just assumed it was bad. I also did not know that this test could ever end. How long is the test supposed to take, and how many errors is normal?
