Random Reboots after changing Case

I recently had a harddrive crash (IBM Deskstar 80GB), but that 's another story. I replaced it a few days later with a Maxtor 160GB. I did a fresh install of Windows 2k. Everything seemed to be working fine. I decided to get a new case, and bought an Antex Sonata. I transferred everything over, and it was working for a few days. Then I started getting random reboots. Happens when playing games, or just surfing the internet. Happened about 4 times the first night, and 2 or 3 times since.

The voltages on all rails seem to be within tolerance (I'm at work now, and can't give exact numbers). Do you think it could be a faulty power supply? This didn't happen at all with my old HD or case.

Athlon XP 1800+
MSI KT333 Ultra
512M Crucial DDR
Maxtor 160GB
Abit GeForce4 Ti4200

Thanks for your help.

Make sure all the cables and connections are secure and nothing is shorting out the case. Also make sure the air flow in the case is good and all the fans are working and blowing in the right direction (front bottom sucking in and back top blowing out).

you mean the IBM Deathstar? I had a Deskstar HD one time and one time only. ran fine for about a year and nothing but problems after that.

Good luck,

all of the above, I stress the importance of checking for shorts, and

did you keep the same power supply? if not it might be a good idea to swap the old one back in for a while

for gits and shiggles, remove the power switch and reset switch connections from the motherboards headers. start the system by temporarily shorting the power switch header (use a jumper, screwdriver, whatever) see if it stays running

Temps seem fine. Not going over 41 on the CPU and about 5 deg cooler in case. I changed back to the old power supply (Generic 300W). Been running for 2 days w/o reboot. So it looks like I got a bad PS from Antec :<. Before switching out, I disconnected everything from teh MB, and reconnected. Didn't think it was shorting. Once I get a replacement and install, I'll let you know how it turns out.

edit: oops didn't read last post. Yeah, if the PSU cured it, then disregard my old post.

Sounds like your hard drive is going bad (yes again!) since you're crashing just browsing IE. I mean you have a good PSU, all parts were known to work in old computer, and through my experiences my trouble comp hanged whenever it tried to access the hdd.

Try another hdd, or run scandisk/ diskdoctor for bad sectors... or some sort of fitness test. Listen for signs of a chugging or silent hdd.
