Right, this isn't on my system, but on a cousin's. He has HL2/CS:S, and it used to run decently...until now. The game/s have slowly started losing FPS. When it was in beta it would average 30 (CS:S i mean) and now it averages around 10.

Just to let you know, his system sucks:
2ghz celeron
700something mb of ram
9600se

yeah...

But i'm just wondering what caused the game to go from playable to unplayable. Oh, and to make it worse, he used to play it on medium settings at 800x600 and get 20fps-30fps.

Now it gets 5fps-15fps on 640x480 on DX7 and the lowest settings possible. It looks like HL1 almost.

Just wondering because I'm curious to why it did that.

Check for virus, spyware, and other similar things.

Also make sure he defrags the hard drives often.

If all else fails just have him format his hard drives and reinstall the OS to clear the junk he has built up, most game machines need that every now and then to help things out.

Before reformatting, I would recommend running task manager. You can close out a lot of programs directly and see if that boosts performance. Then run Msconfig and see how much weird crap he has on startup.

I once fixed a friends computer after his teen daughter had it for a week. They had about 65 processes running in the background.

Well, my cousin isn't a noob at the computer, and he likely does most of that anyways.

He's already reformatted it, but even that seemed to make it worse...
