My wife and I currently have a house in a very nice school district, but we would like to move out into the countryside (about a 20 minute drive from our current house).

We are thinking of having a kid in 3-5 years, so our hesitation is that we want them to still be able to go to school in this district.

If we keep our house inside the good district, but rent it out, does that mean that our kid would be able to attend school in the good district?

Or does the fact that we are renting it out to someone else mean the kid would have to go to school in the shitty district?

No open enrollment?

I had some family members that tried something similar. They eventually got found out and had to pay the school the open enrollment fees for not being in that district.

There is open enrollment, but it's something ridiculous like $11K/year

This depends on the jurisdiction. Call the schools and find out. Around here, it's based on the actual residency of the student, but IIRC, open enrollment is free.

Good question, I'd say call the school board.

Technically, it wasn't really a random question :D

Your kids go to school in the district of THEIR/YOUR residence. If your address is not in the district you want them to attend school is, you're screwed (with a few exceptions, though "most" won't apply to your situation).

For example, my kids are going to school in the city school district this year, while our home address is in the county schools. How did we manage that? Our closing date on the house we are building IN the city school district isn't too far off. The Superintendent signed off on our kids going to the city schools because it didn't make sense to have them switch schools after only a month or so.
