Random problem .. Might be Linux related, but be hardware.

Every once and awhile one of my HDDs clicks off and spins down. Sometimes while I'm playing Warcraft III via WineX under Slackware 9 I'll hear one power down (the same sound it would make as if I was shutting the computer down) and then a little while later it'll power back up. Now I was just listening to some Mp3's with XMMS when I heard one of 'em click off again, musta been my slave because that's where my Mp3's are and XMMS froze and locked up my system. Anyone know what's going on? My system drive is brand new, and my slave drive is maybe 2 years old.. for some reason I don't think the drives are going and I'm wondering if anything else could be going on

It sounds like your HDD may be dying. What kind of drive it is? I highly doubt it's linux related.

It's a WD, hmm.. Guess I should backup what I need. I really hope a WD hasn't died in 3 years.

Yep, I have a 13GB wd drive that started doing that, so I swapped it out for a different drive. I guess that's the "click of death" people always talked about with IBMs. It would click, spin down a little, spin back up, and then start working again. It would sometimes cause a pause in my mp3s.

It could also be a faulty connection to the PSU I suppose.

I had this problem and hooking the hdd up to another 4-pin molex fixed it.
