Hi All,

I just bought a new computer all parts from Newegg.ca


Core i5 760
Intel Motherboard H55: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-394-_-Product
Gigabyte GTX 460 1 GiB: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-333-_-Product
G.Skill RAM 2x2 GiB

Computer was fine for a week-- everything runs, starcraft 2, crysis... however these two days, during a game of SC2, the computer would just shut down... no warnings, no beeps, just shutdown and power off. I touched the CPU heatsink and GPU heatsink, they dont seem to be that hot. I am stumped, any ideas?

Since you already observed your GPU/CPU is not that hot, is your PSU very warm/hot to the touch?

That would be my first guess. Could be the PSU (for whatever reason) is not powerful enough to handle the load (though I'd doubt it, since your rig wouldn't hit 520 watts at load...)

Check the temps CPU and GPU using CoreTemp and GPU-Z. A cool heatsink can mean 1 of 2 things.
(1) The chip isn't putting out much heat.
(2) The HSF isn't making good thermal contact with the chip and thus is not doing it's job (remove heat from the chip).

If the temps are high, then (2) is occurring.

In Game SC2 temperatures are around 60 C for both CPU and GPU according to GPU-Z and the intel motherboard tool

your cpu or gpu may be fine but other parts that overheat (things that aren't monitored ) may cause random shutdowns.

run the case open with a desktop fan pointed at it. see if you get shutdowns.

Still, try having a fan blowing on it. A PC on an open bench (i.e. what you have) can have various components on the mobo overheat because in a case, they would have at least some air flowing over them.

im touching the south bridge.. its not hot either... the RAM is definitely not hot either... but it hasnt crashed in the past 2 hrs too....

If your CPU heatsink isn't making proper thermal contact with your CPU, then your heatsink will feel cool.
Because the heat isn't being transferred to the cooler the way it should be.
Go into your BIOS and adjust the thermal shutdown temp higher to see if your PC runs longer before it shuts down.
