Random popping sounds from speakers

Just setup a surround sound system a few weeks ago, and I've started noticing random popping/ticking sounds from the speakers. It seems to happen mostly in quiet scenes when a speaker is initially starting to produce sound after a pause. Any idea what could be causing it?

more details? I know that the Onkyo TX-SR605 receivers needed a firmware upgrade to prevent speaker pop...maybe this is what you have, maybe it isn't..

Receiver / Model / Type of sound it is playing back, etc. would be helpful.

I had speaker pop but it was also doing it when I would turn up the volume. It did it on one speaker, so it ended up being the receiver.

This is the Onkyo HT-S6100 system. I think the receiver is basically the same as the 606. This usually happens when watching HDTV with spoken parts (Lost, The Office), most noticeably on the surround channels.

IIRC, this was only for "bitstreaming" TrueHD or DTS-HD MA material, I forget which. There's none of that coming in OTA or through cable TV, obviously.

I'm going to lean towards "bad receiver", or possibly "not grounded properly receiver".

It seems like this is only happening on a couple of shows. I'm wondering if it's just bad encoding/reception and not anything with my system.

Do you have good signal from you antenna? Usually if digital audio OTA starts to drop you would get a chirp not a pop but who knows...

otherwise I agree with erwos, it's most likely a bad receiver. Can you test the channel levels (play the hiss test tone through each speaker) in the setup of the receiver and replicate the popping? Rr try connecting the source analog just to see what happens?
