Random loss of video/sound (crash?)

Within 5-10 minutes of booting up I will suddenly loose the signal to my monitor as well as any sound output. The PC is still powered as far as I can tell; the fans are spinning, the red activity LED on my case is lit up...

However, when I boot up in safe mode (as I am now), I don't seem to have any problem. I've scanned with AVG anti-virus and Adaware - negative for anything.
I've combed through my processes list, trying to isolate the problem, with no success.
This began just today, BTW, after I installed various updates via windows.update.

The thing that really gets me is that several times, I have not been able to get a POST beep, and had to wait several minutes before I could get a successful boot-up.

PC specs as follows:
Windows XP pro sp2
Intel P4 2.4, northwood
MSI 654M mobo
512x2 3200 DDR RAM
GeForce 6800nu
60gb IDE HDD, 120gb IDE HDD

Jesus,

Welcome to the Forums!

What power supply are you using and do you have a different one to try?

After a little more troubleshooting I found that Sygate firewall was the cause of the problem...
Strange, yes, but true.
The problem only occurs when the firewall is running. So I got ZoneAlarm last night and left my PC running untill now, whereupon I am using it. Problem solved, I guess.

And thanks for the welcome.
