my computer locks up hard while I am browsing the web - seemingly at random times. This is a hard lockup - cursor freezes cntl-alt-del does nothing - even on repeated tries. No blue screen - just freeze. Have Athlon 850 with MSI-6330 K7T Pro. Using nework card and ICS to share connection. Any help would be appreciated.

Maetryx here,

Check that all your fans are spinning, especially the CPU fan. I've seen this happen to computers a few times. Once my sister's computer had a problem where it worked good on normal days but locked up on hot days. It turned out that the fan on here cpu was not spinning, but the heat sink alone was good enough until there was a hot day.

I think if it were heat related then it would likely lockup on hot days or under heavy load. But if your consistently getting lockups in Internet Explorer then I'd say it's not heat related.

I had this problem with my computer a while ago. At the time a new set of NVidia reference drivers finally fixed the problem.

I had the same problem. It was a conflict with the internal modem. I took out the inernal modem, reinstalled Windows and changed to an external modem and I haven't locked up once. Others with the same problem say it was their Sound Blaster card causing the conflicts, so you may have to fix the IRQ settings from the BIOS. If this fails to solve the problem, you may have to disable to ACPI from device manager. I haven't had to do that and I'm not sure whether you need to reinstall Windows without ACPI or if you can just disable it from device manager.

Random lockups can be cause by several things so start with cooling,IRQ conflicts & maybe a faulty CPU(I had a faulty cpu that cause random lockups).

I went into system information under "components" "problem devices" and this came up: ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering - Error code 22.

I took the SB Live Value out and the lockups have decreased, but not eliminated.

Thanks for your responses.

Always make sure you have latest drivers and make sure your hardware is supported by your Windows OS by going here.
