My computer keeps locking up randomly whenever i'm running the SETI@home client and am connected to the net.

Sometimes it's fine but most of the time it just totally freezes.

Please can someone help me?
I'm on the net most of the day so it's seriously cutting down on my WU production
Usually locks up when i have the following programs running:
  • Zone Alarm v2.6.362
  • Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect v7.07.23D
  • MSN Messenger v4.5 (4.5.0127)
  • SETI CLI client v3.03.i386
  • SETI Driver v1.6.3.3
  • Internet Explorer v5.5

OS is Windows 98SE
All hardware specs can be found on my rig page.
[note]: I have recently installed a GeForce3 Ti 200 and the latest detonator drivers (23.11)

[EDIT]: I wasn't sure whether to put this in Tech Support or DC

DO you have anything in this system overclocked? I had a Athlon system that kept locking up randomly and the only thing it was running was Seti. I had the FSB set to 142. I scaled the overclock down to 140 and everything has been running smoothly since. That was about a week ago.

I also have a Geforce 3 Ti 200. It is overclocked but I don't remember the overclock (I'm on my work PC right now). I know I had to back down the video card overclock to play UnrealTourney reliably.

I didn't have a problem with the Geforce3 causing instability with Seti. It seems to me backing off the overclock on the video card would be a good place to start. Keep posting to the forum if you need assistance.

Check your voltages. If the +5v is very low, 4.8 or less, or erratic, may be a power supply issue. My XP1600+ strains the 300watt pwr supply I'm using, the +5v is constantly at ~4.85 only, a common occurence with most AMD cpu's, but can certainly cause random lock-ups.... hth

Looks like you could be right r0tt3n1, my +5V is hovering between 4.78 and 4.81. Also just to point out in case any of this is helpful to people, my 3.3V is a constant 3.35 and my 12V is constantly at 11.89.

How would i go about fixing this problem? I have a Jetway 663AS PRO motherboard (VIA KT133 chipset), Duron 750MHz and a 250W power supply.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me

It is generally accepted that a 300watt pwr supply minimum should be used for AMD Athlons. Altho there are many at less than 300watts which are listed as acceptable by AMD. Maybe replace it, or use it as the next excuse for the itchy upgrade bug and get the cool new case you have been wanting!! ;) :)
