ok, i just got my new comp up after a long hassle with broken ram etc.. and now, sometimes i get random lock ups, and reboots.

i do not think it is the ps because i am using an enlight 300w and do not have many extra peripherals.

i did narrow one thing down. when i run windows media player, it locks up. sometime when i am browsing with ie, it locks up. and on 3 occasions it has rebooted itself.

here is what i am running

300w enlight ps
epox 8k7a
20gig 7200rpm wd hdd
256mg pc2100 ddr crucial ram
sblive value
linksys nic
creative 52x cdrom
mitsumi floppy
1gig athlon
32mg cardexpert geforce2 mx
EDIT: WIN98 se OS

things to note:
the system detected the cpu @ 750 mhz. i had to change to fsb from 100 to 133 to get it to the full 1gig.

now. WHAT IN THE HELL COULD IT BE?!?! so many things....

appreciate the help.

You left out what OS you are using.

If you are using W2K: Go to System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > System Failure ... make sure "Automatically Reboot" is not checked.

Do you have the feature (and pardon me for not knowing the exact name) that instead of giving blue screen of death it will reboot on any error. Do you get a bsod ever? If you have this turned on to give bsod I would think maybe there is a problem with the ps due to the random reboots and freezes. Often power supply type symptoms

However if you had it so it doesn't give you bsod this may be a hardware conflict. LIve cards and nic cards are fgavorite culprits in this field. Look their first. What via drivers are you using and I know that the agp is using amd drivers.

May wish to reformat and piece slowly and see when problem arises. Power issues are tricky and hardware issues can be as well when we have so man avenues to look.

i never heard of the reboot inplace of bsod error. and yes, i do get bsod too sometimes. sigh, this is distressing. if i cant figure this out i guess reformat is an option although i really rather avoid that. reguarding sblive and nic. i installed the sblive first, then drivers. then i put in the nic card. do you think a clean install would solve the problems? should i ditch 98 for 2k??

another thing. my cpu temp is 39c and ambient temp is 24c. so its not that. if it was the ps, is there anyway to tell for sure?? when people have problems with that its usually cause their ps cant dish out enough wattage for all the devices they are running. but i am running bare minimums. and its not like enlight ps is a POS. so im guessing its software? imma go fuk around with IRQs see if there are any conflicts. ill post back.

odd, gsaldivar tell you what to try if you have win2k, your responce is "done" yet later in your posting you state that you're using win98! :frown:

Actually we were both editing our posts at the same time :D

He originally left out the fact that he was running W98 - and my original response was only to remind him of that omission.

Windows 98 might suck, but it does not lock up and random reboot for no reason. If it is doing that, it sounds a lot more like a hardware issue not a Windows 98 issue.

I agree that this is sounding like a hardware problem - I would upgrade to W2K anyway though. :)
