Random Hiccups

Hey guys:

I've been experiencing some random hiccups on my computer in the past few days. Specs as as follows.

Intel Core i7 920 (no OC)
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 (F7 BIOS)
G.SKILL DDR3 1333 3x2GB (timing and volts all set correctly)
ATI HD4850 512MB
4 year-old Hitachi 400GB HDD (single partition, OS drive)
Plus some more HDDs for storage
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

I've never had this problem until maybe a week or two ago. The computer would run fine for hours after a fresh boot in the morning. But if I leave it on until late afternoon, it would start to get random hiccups. It's not with all applications, just a few. Notably Google Chrome (latest stable release) and Microsoft Live Messenger.

When I'm typing in Chrome for example, it would sometimes hang for a second or two, then the words would come out. New tabs sometimes would take a few seconds to open, and closing tabs would hang for a second sometimes. This is really annoying. Nothing is using a lot of CPU or memory, as I checked in the Task Manager. I've tried a few games when the hiccups are present in Chrome and Messenger, and they all run perfectly fine.

A fresh reboot will fix the problem, as the problem only seems to happen when the computer is left on for some hours (with lots of idle time, and I never close Chrome). But simply restarting Chrome/Messenger won't fix the problem. I was wondering if anybody else is experiencing similar problems or know what's causing it. I've seen such hiccups in Chrome before on somebody else's computer, so I'm thinking it could be causing it. I can't find any abnormalities in the Chrome process though.

Also could this be HDD related? As my OS drive is pretty old.

Thanks in advance for any help!
