Random Hard drive data corruption ... ??? Heat problem ??

Windows 2000 SP2
T-Bird 1.2 AXIA, A7V133, 256mb generic
40gb IBM 60GXP
45gb IBM 75GXP

Every now and then, my system will crash, and will perform a CHKDSK on start-up and will find errors on one of my drives (something like removing index from ... ... ) Then everything is normal. Some files have also been corrupted. It's really hot out here in Southern California, and I don't have AC ... I run HDD Temp sometimes, and yesterday when it happened one of the drives was up to like 54C, and the other one that had a fan was like 45C ... I know thats hot! ... Any ideas what might cause this? Is it most likely because of the heat?? Also, for reference, according to BIOS my ambient was 44C and the CPU temp was 51C ...
