Random hanging?

Okay a month ago I built this PC and have had nothing but problems with it!
Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz
Hercules ATi Radeon 9700 Pro
AC97 Onboard sound (You will see why below)
1024MB Kingston PC2700 DDR Ram
52x24x52 CD-R/RW drive
Windows XP Pro w/ SP1.
SoYo SY-P4I 845PE Lite motherboard.

Problem 1: Lockups, overheating, BSOD in games, random rebooting.
It turns out the P4 was defective. So I sent it back and got a new one. w00t! Just got it the other day.

Problem 2: Lock ups in games still occured.
I tried everything, I got the latest drivers from hercules as the ATi official drivers will not work with hercules cards... Finally I decided to check the site for the sound blaster I had in the PC at the time. Turns out that since my speakers squealed on game freezing it was a hardware conflict with the SB Audigy Gamer, so I took that out and switched to onboard sound. So then UT2k3 worked great, except maybe one in 20 times I would play it it would freeze.

Problem 3: Everything worked expect warcraft. It would freeze when trying to download and install patches, it would freeze when offline games first started, it would freeze at the menu.
Never could fix that one, I emailed Hercules and Soyo. Soyo told me to reset the CMOS, load fail safe bios defaults, install the newest intel chipset drivers and that would fix it, it never did.

Problem 4: Now there are random lockups. Sometimes in notepad, sometimes in IE, sometimes in Outlook, mostly when watching a video. I just don't know what to do. It just locks up and there is nothing I can do, I have tried everything and I can't fix it. I was told to come here because the members here are supposed to be really smart and helpful. So please I beg of you, help me here.

Welcome to Anandtech!

Are you running the latest drivers for the 9700? Have you tried both ATI ones and Hercules ones?

What kind of temps are you getting on your CPU now?

Have you installed all the updates from Windows Update?

Can you download the patches for Warcraft (I assume III?) without using their update utility?

Whats the conflict with the Audigy?

hi,
to add to what thecorm has suggested.....
have you checked the event logs? what errors do you see?
this could also be memory, try running memtest86 or docmemory from a floppy and check your ram.
memtest86
docmemory

good luck

1)Hercules cards can't use the default drivers because of something diffrent in the card that would cause the card to fail to initialize. There is a way to go into the registry and change some things to fix that but that is time consuming as hell and wouldn't fix the problem.
2) 44C
3) Yes
4) For classic WarCraft 3 yes, for the expansion beta test, no.
5) I sent an email to Creative and told them everything I have and they couldn't tell me where the conflict was, they just told me to take everything out of the system and try it with each piece, it doesn't matter because I would rather just use the onboard. Audio really isn't important to me.

I checked the event logs and there were quite a few errors in there but they were all minor things like a problem with an XP networking service, nothing that is really important. I will do the thing with the memory soon, anything else I should do while I am at it?
