random freezing

I have windows xp installed on a duron 900 with 512 of ram.
My problem is that it has random freezes
It just seems to run fine then it will freeze for 30 seconds or so.
It does not seem to be a heat problem
I have been running xp on the system for about 6 months with out a problem
But now there is all these random lockup so I did a low level format with the tool provided by my hard drives manufacturer
I reinstalled windows and it?s started doing it again.
I thought it might be hard ware related but two of my friends that use windows xp are having the same problems and it?s not an AMD problem as one of them is a P4.
It does not seem to be a virus as we all keep our antivirus programs up to date.
I was wondering if any one else had the same problem and has fixed it?
Could it be one of Microsoft?s software updates for windows xp??

This is a wierd one. It's gonna be tough to troubleshoot. I've seen it once caused by outlook trying to read from a corrupt file. Try a chkdsk /r

Does it happen if you clean boot?

Start, Run, MSCONFIG, uncheck the Startup Items box, click the Services tab, click Hide all Microsoft Services, uncheck anything not hidden.

If it still happens, then it's something in the OS itself. If not, it's one of those background services/applications.

It turned out to be the trial version of Webroot's Spy Sweeper we were all using at the time. Soon as we all turned of the menory shield, they all stopped freezing.
Thanks for your help.
