I?m looking for any suggestion with this problem. I used my old computer parts (CPU, MB, RAM, graphic card, sound card) to upgrade my sister?s computer. I noticed some random freezes and lock up doesn?t matter what I was doing. I didn?t have these problems when I used to use these parts.
When random freezes happens, it would lock up for a few second, then the screen would go black and I?ll hear a ?click? sound like when the monitor is changing screen size. It would come back with some distorted graphic, but if I right click and select refresh, the distortion goes away. Once in awhile it?ll just lock up, but almost always, it?ll unfreeze.
I noticed that usually when the computer locks up is when I try to type something. For example, I click the text box to search for something at yahoo and the computer would lock up. I?ll still see the cursor blinking and able to move the pointer, but the computer will not respond, not even ctrl+alt+delete.
It has all the latest driver, BIOS, and fresh Win XP install. I did notice something when I was putting the computer together. I noticed that there?s a pin (not sure if it?s the correct term) missing in the connector from the monitor to the graphic card. I didn?t think it would be a problem because it was working fine before I put in the new parts. I think the pin was gone before my sister got this computer because I didn?t notice any pin in the new graphic card port or in the old one. Not sure if that could cause the problem.
I don?t think it?s a problem with heat, it runs around 40°C to 50°C. In BIOS, it showed that the MB is getting enough power from the power supply. So, I think it?s a problem with the monitor connector, or the graphic card. I was told to run the event viewer and see if anything comes up, but I don?t know how to test if there?s a problem with the graphic card.
Any suggestion is welcome.
