Did you know that studying is done best in complete silence?

Listening to soft music while studying lessens your brain's ability to store information and makes it tougher to recall.

This post should increase test scores by at least 5%.

This is one random fact that I won't refute you on. It's rather true.

However, listening to music can calm you down, making it easier to study in the first place.

True. Perhaps some nice music to take your mind off of things before studying?

our teachers used to say not to chew gum or eat either as it was also a distraction.

Did you know the Roman Colosseum had a retractable roof?

From Wiki:

Another innovative feature of the Colosseum was its system of sunshades, known as the velarium, which consisted of a canvas-covered, net-like structure made of ropes, with a hole in the center.[1] This roof covered two-thirds of the arena, and sloped down towards the center to catch the wind and provide a breeze for the audience. Sailors, specially enlisted from Misenum and housed in the nearby Castra Misenatium when needed, standing on special platforms, manipulated the ropes on command.[4] (A similar system may be seen at the ruins of the Capua amphitheatre, and it was recreated at the Globe Theatre for their 2006 production of Titus Andronicus).

I like to always have my music on. Fvck silence.

If you like it, that's great! Just remember it won't help you study :)

It does if it keeps you awake. Sleep = no study

Everyone's different. Some of us can associate things we're studying to songs we're listening to. Once we hear that song again (or think about it) we recall what's attached.

To Bone Thugs guy....BS. They would never allow you to listen to something while taking a test at any reputable school.

Silence is golden so to speak. It also has been proven that listening to classical music right before taking a test (say in the car on the way) helps boost scores on tests.

It's not just music--it's your environment.

Studies show that if you study & test in the same environment, your performance increases. So it's best to make the two as similar as possible.

The following is an interesting example... they had people get drunk and study a topic, and then take a test while sober. Another group got drunk, studied, and took the test while being drunk again. The latter group had the better performance by a significant margin, apparently.

Study method duly noted.

I figured this was a common sense type fact.

I can't study if it's quiet. I went to a school where we had no walls between classrooms (open concept) and used bookshelves and chalkboards to section off areas for rooms. After four years of that and having to try to take tests with other classes going on and such you end up needing some kind of background noise or you can't concentrate.

Actually I developed a system of recall assistance by listening to music. I pay enough attention to later equate an album with a section of study. If I then become stuck recalling information on the test I'll listen to the part of the album (in my head) that was on while I studied that information. I've had great success with it so far.

I got the idea when I read a study on similar situations.

On the other hand, Mozart helps your brain retain what you're studying.

It's called State Dependant Learning.

As another example, there are a few skateboard tricks I used to only be able to do while drunk, as I learned it when I was drunk.
