Random drops with Linksys WRT54GS

I have a Linksys WRT54GS with tomato firmware 1.28. Recently its been dropping my connection to the router randomly once every few hours. I know its dropping me from the router and not the internet because i lose connection to the network, and i can no longer access the router page during the loss. It last maybe 5-10 seconds but its enough to cause distress to what ever im doing, mainly gaming. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

Thats odd, ive always heard of these Linksys WRT54 models as being one of the better ones, and i know a lot of people still use these ones today. Even so I dont think old age is the issue here.

For me I needed to change the Standard Channel. 8 - 2.447GHZ in fact. Keep trying different ones until you don't have any more issues.

You should only be using channels 1, 6, or 11, with 2.4Ghz 802.11b/g/n networking.

Any other channels, will partially overlap, and cause issues.

You are referring to the WRT-54G, yours is WRT-54GS

Pretty sure these are the two wireless routers I have. They were so crappy on the wireless side I turned off the radio and use them as a switch. Bought a Buffalo wireless router instead. But they are also so shitty as a switch I just replaced them yesterday. They avg about 2-3MB\sec on the 100mbps switch ports. Now they will be going in the trash.

there are so many revisions of this model, each with different ram and flash memory. What version are you running? I've has my wrt54gs v2 with 216mhz cpu, 32mb ram, 8 flash ram running for 2 years without a reboot. I'd flash another firmware try ddwrt.

Old Routers are Not like Old cars. I.e., they have No value as a "Hot Rod".

There are newer sub $50 Wireless Routers that are better.

I have a 2 year old router that suddenly just started dropping my wireless connection for 5 seconds at a time every 1/2 hour or so...

I used netstumbler to see what channels nearby wireless access points were...

I was surprised to see how many new ones there were... 4 new ones since I last checked about 6 months ago.

3 of them using the same channel as me. I switched the channel to one that no one else was using and my wireless connection has been solid ever since.

OP, if you can, try a different, compatible, power brick.

One of my Netgear WNR834v2 routers started showing connection speeds as low as 13Mbit/sec, instead of 130Mbit/sec. Turned out, the power brick was going out. Had two of them die after around 3 years of solid usage.

Once I connected them with a brand-new replacement, it was as if the router was good as new.

You might try that.

time to get a new router like the buffalo airstation. My 54gs would do the spiral death to 1mbps with newer client devices. Been rock solid using the airstation (high powered 2.4ghz) in AP mode.

Sounds like interference, try channels 1, 6, 11 and read the sticky on antenna positioning. If you have a lot of other wireless networks around you that can really cause trouble.
