Random Crashing, possible video problem?

Recently I have some crashing problems that've become more and more frequent to just put off as a glitch.

It occurs when I'm playing games, and I'm not sure what the crash reason is, but the computer would just crash... as in Sound stops, video stops, keyboard stops... everything just comes to a halt. This also happened before but was resolved when I replaced my dying hardrive with a new one, but its happening again.

Also interesting.... when I'm playing Doom 3, I will notice tiny black flicks that go by... almost as if I was in a movie theater though I'm positive its not suppose to do that. I'm not sure what these are but its leading me to think it might be a graphics card problem.

Is there something I can do to test the graphics card? Maybe its a heat issue? (seems to happen more often when I leave my computer on overnight) Maybe its a HD problem again? Memory problems?

any help would be greatly appreciated.
