Hey all,
My first post here though I've been watching this forum for years
Anyway, I recently built my very first computer. The specs are in my signature. For the most part it runs fine, though it's been getting very occasional, intermittent BSoDs. They seem to be random. I haven't jotted down any error codes, but I will the next time it does it. It also crashes out of programs sometimes (usually stuff like Photoshop or modern games).
Last night I got two BSoDs within 2 hours, which was more than I've ever had before. So I decided enough was enough and DLed memtest86+. I ran it with all four memory modules in, and I didn't notice my motherboard had reset back to what it thinks is stock settings until the test was well underway.
The memory is OCZ PC2-8500, rated for 1066MT/s and 5-5-5-15 timings @ 2.1-2.3V. I generally run it at 800MT/s to sync w/ my FSB, and 4-4-4-12 timings @ 2.1V. My motherboard thinks its default should be 1066MT/s with 7-7-7-24 (or something like that, I forget the exact number) @ 2.2V.
Anyway, while all four modules were in, I got 16 errors on the first pass of Test #5 in memtest86+. I turned the computer off and went to bed, thinking I'd figure it out in the morning. I've been trying to replicate this ever since with no success.
When I run test 5 only on all four modules, there are no problems. Same thing when I run 3 passes of all 8 tests on one module at a time. I'm going to try to run memtest on one module across all four mobo slots next, though I'm pretty puzzled as to why I'd get a slew of errors on the very first try of all four modules, but no more ever since.
Is it possible that this is some sort of memory overheating issue? Or might I have a slightly defective chip that only occasionally throws an error, and I just got lucky and caught it last night?
Thanks for the help in advance.
