Random Blue Screens of Death on Win2000 Startup...

Hello Everyone,

I am having problems booting Windows 2000. The strange thing about it is that it seems to only happen once every few bootup attempts. I randomly get a blue screen saying either that my registry file is corrupt and unreadable or that a certain file is missing and bootup cannot continue. Here are my system specs:

Note that nothing is overclocked.

Athlon XP 1900+
Abit KX7333
256mb PC2700 memory
2x40gig Maxtor hard drives (RAID 0 Array on an Abit HotRod 100)
Radeon 8500
Sound Blaster Live 5.1

Any info or help would be great. Thanks.

Can you specify the top three lines of the blue screen?

And are they always the same, or do they differ each time?

Ok this is what it says:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not readable.

Then it goes on to refer to any new software or hardware installations that may have caused this. However, I haven't installed anything new. Any ideas?

Oh, and by the way, I'm pretty sure that this is the message that always appears.

Can't anyone help me with this one? I really don't want to have to reinstall windows, or even worse, to have to migrate to xp. I get the blue screen every 2 boots or so, it's very strange that it doesn't happen every time.

hi,
this sounds like it may be a hd corruption problem like your hd is starting to go bad. try going to maxtor's website and downloading their hd checking utility. and be sure that you have backups.
good luck
