Random Black Screen On Boot

At first I thought this was isolated to the video card but now I'm starting to wonder.

Recently installed a new mobo (ASRock K7S8XE), new CPU (Athlon 2200), a stick of PNY 512MB PC2700 DDR memory and a new video card (Radeon 9600). Got everything installed without having to reformat/reinstall W2K and upon firing up the PC, all I got was a black screen. No BIOS, no "beep", no nothing...just total black screen. Wound up trying several different things after putting my old mobo rig back in. I went and downloaded AGP drivers off the AMD and SiS website. And I even went ahead and installed the ATI drivers off the provided CD. Fired it up and got a picture just fine. Even gamed for a little while with NO problems. Shut down and rebooted later and got the black screen again. I hit reset...black screen. Hit reset again....black screen. Hit reset again and everything cranked up just fine. This hit or miss problem kept happening. I had already ordered a new video card (Radeon 9600PRO) because I ordered the non pro version by mistake. So, I just installed the new PRO card, fired up everything and got the black screen again.

As far as I can tell, the settings in the BIOS look okay unless there's something I'm not picking up on. I also installed the latest Windows2000 service pack just to be safe. And I have now downloaded the most recent Catalyst drivers off the internet and I'm still getting the black screen at least, if not more, every other time I turn on my PC. Using a 17" MAG 770FS CRT monitor but that shouldn't be a conflict.

If it means anything to anyone, when I orginally tried to load the drivers off the provided CD that came with the video car, I got the following error:

16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem
D:\TVER.PIF SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrives.VDD.
Virtual Device Driver Forman In The Registry Is Invalid.

It gave me the option of Cancel/Ignore. I chose "Ignore" and got the following error:

Error Installing iKernel.exe:(0x10000)

If any of that makes sense to anyone, please explain. I just don't understand how the card works perfectly fine every once in a while but then I get a black screen as soon as I turn on the PC most of the time.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows what my problem may be or a solution. If I have to reformat, then fine but I'm hoping it won't have to come to that. I remained within the same chipset (SiS) family when I uprgraded mobos.

Sorry to give you bad news but you need to format pretty much every time you change motherboards if you want a stable computer. You may have stayed with the same chipset but you still need to format. One more thing is what kind of power supply are you using, brand/model?
