Random, Best 7200 rpm drive

Sizes below are just roughly stated.

I am looking for a drive that would be the best at random reads and writes.

I will only need more than 100 GIG.

Would a Short stroked 640GIG be faster than any short stroked 320GIG.

Would a 1T short stroked to 100Gig be faster still?

I don't want to spend much. I saw some good WD drives for about $60 that were single platter. So, what kind of gains could I get by spending a little more?

What drive would you recommend?

Thank You

The 320 and 640GB drives are both 320gb per platter, so they might be similar in the same product line.

Newer 500gb drives are 500gb per platter, so they have higher density, and are probably faster on random reads. Maybe somebody has a good suggestion on a fast single platter 500gb drive...

If you're planing to buy a 1TB disk to short stroke it to 100GB, you might as well just get a value line SSD instead. You won't get that much of a speed increase by simply short stroking your HDD. You can google up the benchmarks and reviews.
