Just disable tyhe directory searching in AIM, that blocks you from everyone but people on your list. Or people who typ eyour name in directly.

Once when I was logged in on my cell phone I started getting random messages as I was walking to a theater. I think I replied once and logged off. So far, the only "random" people I get IMs from are those who I have contacted previously (The case for AIM only. ICQ is a whole nother ballpark)
