It was around 3:50 AM, so it was totally dark. Traveling kinda fast down a road that has no lighting. by the time I saw the little critter it was too late. I know they are considered a nuisance, but I still feel kinda bad for the poor thing. Hopefully its death was quick and painless. :(

I dunno, maybe I'm just nuts.

I really hate running over stuff, makes me feel really bad. Even if its a worthless animal. In fact, it ruins my day. Good luck to ya

Skunks are the worst... it is INSANE how many of them we have here in Connecticut. I grew up in Nebraska and there were not anywhere near this many back there. The balance in Nebraska seemed to favor the raccoons and possums by far. I'd say it was like 30% possums, 60% raccoons, and only 10% skunks there.

Here in Connecticut it is like 60% skunks, 30% raccoons, 10% possums. There are also dramatically fewer rabbits here than I'm used to.

The problem with having such a huge number of skunks is that you're smelling them almost every night when something induces them to spray... and the dead ones are all over the road, usually with accompanying stink.

You can literally walk around my neighborhood at any hour of night and you will not go more than a block without seeing a skunk wandering around in someone's yard, usually 3 of them. They are fucking EVERYWHERE. When I was on the submarine base near here guys walking to their watch assignment in the middle of the night would get sprayed frequently, and they had to have a special barracks room for de-stinkifying them. I think they would be in there for at least a week... thank goodness it never happened to me.

If I hit a skunk I wouldn't feel bad at all, except for my car if it ended up reeking.

I'd feel bad about hitting a raccoon, or a squirrel, or a rabbit, and certainly a cat... and very bad about a groundhog, also, but skunks and possums? Fuck them.

where do you live in CT, it's not so bad near my house. Perhaps once a month you'll smell a skunk or 2. I don't think its that bad.

When we bought our first new car, we were heading to the inlaws the next day to show them, and ran over a skunk on the way. Somehow it sprayed the underside of the car as a dying act of resistance and we couldn't park it in the garage for a month.

Can't say the inlaws were eager to check out our new ride.

If your car doesn't reek, count yourself fortunate.

I was once driving back to NYC from Vermont after a few days of skiing. It was around 15 or 20 degrees out, sun started going down, and right in front of me I saw the evil critter standing there in the middle of my lane just staring at me. I again saw its beady eyes in the rear view after driving over it, quickly realizing it had just sprayed the entire bottom of the car.

Was too cold to roll the windows down any more than a crack and it didn't help much anyway as it was so strong it it tasted like the bastard sprayed you straight in the mouth. Turning the heater on was torture as it pummeled the entire underside of the engine compartment with its ass juice, which resulted in a mixture of shivering and gagging the entire trip. That was the longest 4 hour drive in history.

They are nocturnal. It happens.

I recommend a car wash too.

Tomato prewash though.

And avoid that stretch of road for a day or two.

Also, change you residence; that skunk may have had family members who will be out for revenge :p

i once ran over an armadillo, it was on a curve with traffic coming in the opposing lane. so i slowed way down. I was afraid of him getting stuck under my car and dragged so i veered over as far as i could. Unfortunately that put him directly under my tire and it rolled up and over him. He then ran away cause i couldn't find him. Hope he was okay. My car is pretty light (tercel).

Skunks are pretty bad ass dudes. But their eyesight is terrible. That combined with the fearlessness that is a side effect of strutting around with military grade chemical weapons in their anus means they get run over a lot.
