Ran over a large piece of tire tread

I was on the freeway and didn't see it until it was too late. Took it down my right side. It was about 3 feet long and almost a foot wide. It ripped my front bumper lip right off, ripped the whole right fender underlining out, busted the engine underlining and left fender underlining pretty good. Bumper probably needs replacing. The thing that is worrying me the most is a loud rumbling noise when I'm on the gas til 2000rpm. I'm going to have that checked out today. Hopefully it's just a damaged exhaust system.:(

*Edit: Just got back from the shop and it was nothing serious. Down towards the middle of the car there was small metal bracing that ran across the exhaust piping. This got bent up and was against the piping causing the noise and vibrations. Bent it back into shape and everything is all good. *Wipes sweat off forehead*.

Question now is, should I have my insurance handle the rest of the damage?

Ouch sorry to hear that man. I've had a couple close calls with very large tire chunks and I almost plowed into a washing machine laying in the center lane at 85mph once during the wee hours of the morning.

Rumbling sound...that's a little worrying. Could just be a piece of plastic flapping loose underneath. Could be something mechanical too. Does it get louder as you accelerate to 2000 rpms and then it just goes away? Or is it more like it's constant at any rpm below 2000? Trying to figure out if it's something moving with the wheel like a cv joint/boot, wheel bearing, axle, rotor or tire. Definitely get it looked at sooner rather than later. Anything messed up on the wheel has the potential to take other parts out with it, IE: a busted cv boot will eventually result in the cv joint failing, wheel bearing can gouge your axle/spindle, etc.

I have that feeling as well.

This could very well be a lack of funds for cleanup crews, even though in my state we use state prisoners, it still costs money.

I had the same thing happen last summer except that the car in front of me hit it and shot it up onto my car. Scratched up the bumper and took out the headlight housing, but not a big deal on my 7 year old car. I replaced the housing but left the rest alone. Now I have one clear headlight housing and one yellow cloudy one :) It's scary to think that if it had gone a couple of feet higher it could have gone through the windshield and hit my son.

Sucks.

Last time I ran over tire tread, it punctured my gas line, and cost me $700 to fix ($500 deductible).

That happened to my 1999 Grand Prix once .. It slapped the front bumper, where it destroyed
the paint (no actual damage to bumper) ... but as it went under the car, it did knock the
wheel alignment (toe) out of whack .. So cost of repainting bumper and wheel alignment.
