Fun things arrived today. That's the intake set-up (two straight pipes and two filters, lol) and the tuning box. Install either tonight or Sunday. I'm graduating from college tomorrow so it's kind of a crazy week.
The newer BMWs have an exhaust valve that is modulated based on engine speed (in the exhaust pipes), and it is half closed at lower RPM's. If you open it, then it sounds more aggressive all the time. What does 'opened up the exhaust valves' mean?

That sounds pretty nifty...
the OP is not talking about the valves on the exhaust-side of the head. rather he is talking about valves that are literally found in the exhaust piping...hence why they pivot on a hinge and open as a "butterfly" valve (as opposed to intake and exhaust valves in the head, which are "lift" valves, not "butterfly" valves). How does that affect measuring valve clearance when modifying the heads/cam(s)/etc?

Pretty sure hes talking about changing the VANOS timing on the exhaust side which would be beneficial on a turbo car. Remember VVT parameters can be altered by the ECU programming.
While there are numerous variable runner intake systems, I've never heard of butterflys in the exhaust other than dumps or sequential turbo systems and there is nothing to be had messing with that.
Nope, the 335i has a butterfly valve in the exhaust which bypasses the mufflers partially. Though my valve timing is different![]()
Hmm learn something new...
So is this a performance thing like open dumps or entirely cosmetic for sound tuning? Can't imagine it's for anything other that sound tweaking since it's so late in the system and you still have cats, etc.
VMVT (Variable Muffler Volume Technology) :awe:
I think Chevy quotes a slight increase in horsepower but it's very, very small. Basically just for generating noise pollution when you want to.
Then you have the guys who want to control it by remote:

Viper GTS
you are correct that BMW incorporated the design more or less for the purpose of changing the exhaust note slightly. but it should be noted that, whether BMW intended it or not, changing the amount of exhaust back pressure on a forced induction motor has a much more significant effect on HP/TQ and the powerband in general (though i'm sure you already know this). in stock form, i doubt there's much of a HP/TQ or powerband difference between having the valves open or closed. with the OP's JB4 and dual cone intakes installed though, i don't doubt that opening/closing the exhaust butterfly valves results in a more pronounced difference in both the way the car sounds and drives.Hmm learn something new...

Yeah, no black. I think I actually kind of prefer the 18's.
You're not seriously going to replace those beautiful BMW rims.
Eventually. Especially with how bad my traction issues are now. I need more width in the rear. I also can't think of too many visual mods I'm willing to do to this car, so wheels and LED halos are about it.
We now officially drive the same car. Go us!
I won't be ordering a JB4 until the warranty is over. How significant was the change?
