Fun things arrived today. That's the intake set-up (two straight pipes and two filters, lol) and the tuning box. Install either tonight or Sunday. I'm graduating from college tomorrow so it's kind of a crazy week.

Install of JB4 and intake took a total of 1 hour 15 minutes. It was an easy install other than a few confusing clips. The wiring was very easy and the instructions mostly concise. Didn't need many tools and the car came apart and went back together exactly how you would expect it to.

Turned on the car and entered the main menu. I made sure it was on the right tune, opened up the exhaust valves, and set the shift light. Me and my buddy went and jumped on the highway. Son of a bitch is fast. Really fast. The Sky was slightly more violent, but the BMW just keeps pulling and pulling, it's easy to get lost in how fast it's actually moving. As a DD, it's ridiculously fast. Burnouts in 1st, 2nd, and lots of chirping in 3rd. Opening up the exhaust and the new intake combined to make a great sound.

Couldn't be more impressed. *Crosses fingers that HPFP doesn't ever nuke itself*

What does 'opened up the exhaust valves' mean?
The newer BMWs have an exhaust valve that is modulated based on engine speed (in the exhaust pipes), and it is half closed at lower RPM's. If you open it, then it sounds more aggressive all the time.

That sounds pretty nifty...

How does that affect measuring valve clearance when modifying the heads/cam(s)/etc?
the OP is not talking about the valves on the exhaust-side of the head. rather he is talking about valves that are literally found in the exhaust piping...hence why they pivot on a hinge and open as a "butterfly" valve (as opposed to intake and exhaust valves in the head, which are "lift" valves, not "butterfly" valves).

Pretty sure hes talking about changing the VANOS timing on the exhaust side which would be beneficial on a turbo car. Remember VVT parameters can be altered by the ECU programming.

While there are numerous variable runner intake systems, I've never heard of butterflys in the exhaust other than dumps or sequential turbo systems and there is nothing to be had messing with that.

Being able to vary valve timing and lift doesn't change the physical min max or alter the fact that it's still a physical cam. It just lets you vary it a little +/-, you can't just say "I want max lift at TDC because I want to see what happens" because the cam won't even be in the correct position to begin with.

Nope, the 335i has a butterfly valve in the exhaust which bypasses the mufflers partially just like the z06. Though my valve timing is different :p

Hmm learn something new...

So is this a performance thing like open dumps or entirely cosmetic for sound tuning? Can't imagine it's for anything other that sound tweaking since it's so late in the system and you still have cats, etc.

I think Chevy quotes a slight increase in horsepower but it's very, very small. Basically just for generating noise pollution when you want to.

Then you have the guys who want to control it by remote:

This is how my Vette was with the Mild2Wild switch turned on. Basically, a butterfly valve sits on the straight through exhaust tips and opens above 3500rpm. I much preferred to have them open all the time. GM quotes a 6HP increase if you have the dual mode exhaust or NPP as called in the community.

I wish my V had something similar so that I didn't have to spend money on an exhaust.

you are correct that BMW incorporated the design more or less for the purpose of changing the exhaust note slightly. but it should be noted that, whether BMW intended it or not, changing the amount of exhaust back pressure on a forced induction motor has a much more significant effect on HP/TQ and the powerband in general (though i'm sure you already know this). in stock form, i doubt there's much of a HP/TQ or powerband difference between having the valves open or closed. with the OP's JB4 and dual cone intakes installed though, i don't doubt that opening/closing the exhaust butterfly valves results in a more pronounced difference in both the way the car sounds and drives.

You're not seriously going to replace those beautiful BMW rims.

Eventually. Especially with how bad my traction issues are now. I need more width in the rear. I also can't think of too many visual mods I'm willing to do to this car, so wheels and LED halos are about it.

Congrats! I might eventually put a JB in my car when it goes off warranty. I've never driven a 335i with a JB in it but have read about it in e90post. Sounds like a great upgrade! I've got an LCI 335i and put in aftermarket LED AEs and love them. They really make the car stand apart. I get looks all of the time from other 3 series drivers. You might want to get them as well. There's a guy on the e90post forum that makes them and sells them through north american motorsports. Mine are called LUX H8s and I believe the ones that fit your model are called LUX4/5.

I have nothing but good things to say about my Mickey Thompson ET Street 315/35/17 if you're looking for a tire. Nitto 555R if you need something a little less soft that won't shed 10 miles of tread life just rolling down the driveway :awe: The Mickeys seriously leave high res black tread marks even when they aren't spinning and they are soft as gum when you sink your fingers into them.

Also you're a bastard because now I don't know what I would like better, a E46 M3 or a 335i. I'm a sucker for cars that are cheap and easy to mod.

We now officially drive the same car. Go us!

I won't be ordering a JB4 until the warranty is over. How significant was the change?

Two different cars. The first I was lukewarm on the performance of, the second I am happy to call my DD.
