ramdom freezes on new computer

i built a computer using everything brand new except for my radeon 9800 card. everything has been going well for me, computer has been running fine but there is only one problem, the computer freezes at random times. sometime it maybe right after i move my mouse from bootup, or 15 hours later when im surfing the web, just randomly it will freeze. my friend has the exact same set up as mine same motherboard, same power supply, same proccessor, etc. the only different thing is our hard drives and our ram. but he his comp doesnt freezes. i have tried turning off fast write, but yet it still freezes. what are the possiblilities that is causing the problem? could it be the ram or the hd? many thanks

Yeah it could be your hard drive or memory. What i would do is exchange them both with your friend's hd and memory and see if you still get a freeze. If you do, then it's something else causing the problem.

Are you experiencing any heating issues, high CPU idle temps, etc...? There should be adequate cooling in your system.

And what OS are u on?

i dont think im experiencing heat issues: cpu is at idle36c and load 40c. system is at 36c. currently using windows xp with sp1a with the latest windows update.

if i have bad or faulty rams, would running memtest be able to tell if it is bad or faulty?

i am thinking about trying to switch ide ports to the hd and see if that would work.

bump anyone please?

- i ran memtest for 30 min and passed all test (5 tests)
- i did and error check on the harddrive and no problem.

anyone other ideas??
