Somebody posted a very well-written defense of RAMBUS a long time ago. I wanted to read it again but never was able to find it.

Given that they won their case, they're definitely not a troll.

they're a troll because they have not contributed on good thing to the industry.
they only made hot, slow ram what, 8 years ago? what have they done since except suing people? i don't respect a company that does that.

Innovate. Do something. I hate patent trolls.

Rambus is a waste of space. They do own some patents that are used in a great many products, but its how they got these patents passed and how they encouraged other companies to use the technologies in their products that makes them a complete troll.

I wonder if it'd be less aggravating for the companies being sued to pool their resources and just buy Rambus outright and open their patent portfolio up to everyone.

This is a very different case to the old Rambus litigation.

In this case, their position is not tarnished by allegations of dishonesty and subversion of standards meetings.

Instead, Rambus are going after a wide variety of patents that they bought over the last 7 or 8 years. In particular, they bought dozens of patents that cover systems like SATA, SAS, PCI-e, etc. Now that these technologies have become commonplace, they are looking to cash-in on their patents.

What's interesting is that rambus acquired the patents shortly before PCI-e was released, and at about the time that SATA was released - and was not directly involved in the development of either specification.

The question then becomes did the original source of these patents (Velio communications, among others) licence the technology to the rest of the industry? If they did offer a free and open licence, then it would seem difficult for rambus to renege on that. If, however, they just turned a blind eye in a form of tacit gentleman's agreement (or because they didn't recognise the importance), then Rambus may well have a legitimate case.

That was probably Azurik.
RMBS stock has gone nowhere since our first discussion we had on it years ago.

The discussion on Rambus began there with Azurik, me, along with others who took part in the discussion.

I can remember the days when one PC700 RIMM is more expensive than my new $600 laptop.

If companies did steal their work...

Steal their work? BS. Patents aren't "Work" they are ideas. Companies like rambus make it their business to patent broad enough ideas that they could make a case to sue anyone over them. They have no intention of actually producing any product or even leasing out the ability to product products on their patents.

In short, they are strictly a blight on society. They contribute nothing (short of keeping their lawyers busy).

What "work"? Defining vague general blanket predictable evolution of technologies that were eventually going to be common place industry wide anyway?

What do they have a patent on? "The serial bus"? Give me a break. You could sue every PC electronics company over the VGA connector since it has 5 "serial" buses (R G B H V).

Why didn't they say something earlier if they were concerned? Instead they sit back for years waiting for something to get wide spread, then come out of the dark claiming they had a patent on it only after they know it's too late and collecting money is the only option.

Obvious they are nothing but crooks looking for easy money like the RIAA and other such institutions.

Rambus is everything SCO aspires to be, but could not make (winning lawsuits) for themselves.

BTW, this is why patents, IMO, need to DIAF. At very least on the level of technology patents. That, or they need to be severely revamped. The current setup is messed up for tech.
