alright, soem werid stuff is hapepning to my pc. Whenever i copy a file over the network, form oen folder to another or install a program for cd (or anything..lol) my ram goes form 300 free to 4 free then eveerything starts to get paged and goes really slow. Now, the IO operations (or whatever) is really pissing me off because SOEMTHING REALLY WERID HAPPENS!

If i say, cancel the operation even only a few seconds afetr it starts, then i re-do it, my ram stays normal. it doesn't go down all the way to zero again. So i copy a big file (700 megs) to another folder, wait 3 seconds (by that time my ram jumped from 300 to probably <200 free) then cancel it, ram goes back to around 300, then re-copy it, and my ram is at a constant 250 or whatever.

i know i messed with the memory managemnt registry settings, but i undid my changes. the registry seems to change the settings by itself. I put 'disablepagingexecutive' to 0, and nows its at 1 again..lol.

i think it has soemthing to do with the iopagelocklimit, but i delete the dword.

what do nonpaged and pool and all that stuff do? i think it may be that.

i even burnt a bad disk becasue my ram went to almost zero, started paging, and things went so slow my hd couldn't keep up with the burner.

2nd question. what are currentcontrolset001 and 002? i think those are chaning my registry even when i change it back to soemthing else. how can i stop the registry form chaning itself (things that it shouldnt change...like disablepagingexecutive)?

thanks,
david.

actually, if someone could paste me their
'HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management'

values (someone with 512 megs of ram...that knows as a fact they don't have the same problem as me, lol) then i'd appreciate it. maybe even throw in a currentcontrolset001 and currentcontrolset002...lol

thanks,
david.

And this, my friends, is one nice example of why you shouldn't mess with things that you don't understand.

But changing settings you don't understand doesn't teach you anything other than what not to touch. If you really want to learn how Windows handles memory management get a copy of "Inside Windows 2000".

Cheers to that too

Normally I don't say anything about spelling but please either get a spell checker or learn to type correctly. You make it incredibly hard to understand when every other word is misspelled.

If you have the time and don't care, how else would you learn.

Sorry, meant what better way to learn. I have read a lot, but sometimes you have to get your hands dirty and experiment.

But changing registry values won't teach you much at all. Some of them are self-explanatory, but most require knowledge about how the system works to really know what they do. Do you really know what the PagedPool and nonPagedPools are just by seeing them in the registry?

Better yet, get the latest version...Windows Internals, 4th Edition.

Ah, thanks. I knew there wasn't an "Inside Windows XP" but I wasn't sure what was to replace "Inside Windows 2000"

Did you touch the hot stove after your mom told you it would hurt? When you are playing around with hundreds of dollars worth of equipment, it's best not to just mess around. You could seriously screw it up and be out cash that you might not even have. Learn first, do later.
