RAM upgrade

I have one machine (Athlon XP 1900+) that was running on 512mb of ram. One of the sticks died and now it is an unbearable 256. So I'm thinking I'm going to buy a stick of 512 for it. That costs like $50 or so, and then it's only another $30 to get a gig. But then I've already got a gig in my computer. So should I buy 2x1GB and upgrade my computer to 2 GB, moving the 2x512 in my computer to the Athlon XP, or should I just buy a gig for the Athlon or should I just do 512.

It seems like I always do this. Anytime I need to spend money on a computer I try to upgrade the whole line of them.

Cliffs:

Ram died, second machine (used daily) now running on 256MB
Main machine has 1GB
Do I buy 512 for the second machine, 1GB for the second machine, or,
Buy 2GB for main machine and move 1GB to second machine.

Ram recommendations are appreciated for whatever you may vote. Thanks.

Why not just over kill and get the 2 gig? lol I had RAM problems just today, I bought a Gig ram and had 512 in here, but both of them were double sided so the memory speed decreased, i returned the 512 to get a 256 and i ended up spending 10 bucks more for a 512 single sided module!

Go the 2gig. It is overkill, but with the price of RAM how it is at the moment, might as well try to future-proof yourself.

If you're looking for cheap 1GB sticks I might recommend Crucial Value because they're just speed binned Ballistix - Ballistix can do 250mhz at 2.5-2-2 at low voltages- Crucial Value probably won't hit the same timings but typically hit close to 250mhz at at least 3-3-3.

Refer to Zebo's value and timing guide at the top of the CPU forum.

If you go to X2 ultimately in your main rig which you may wish to those 2GB will stand you in good stead given they'll be doing 1T at high fsb.

With the advent of DDR2 almost on the doorstep, I would just go with the minimum required to ran the systems decently. Instead hold and save your money for the next upgrade of different mobo, cpu's or ram.

Just to say the next sockets eg M2 for AMD will include DRM technology - accordingly I think it's worthwhile avoiding it for as long as possible.

Besides DDR2 is just a stop gap for a year before DDR3 - AMD will be changing sockets and technology quickly so any future investment will be just for that exact moment - not much different from now except you can have a path to upgrade to dual and indeed do so cheaply on mature platforms.

No brainer to me
