RAM upgrade question

I was doing an upgrade for my mom. She bought 128MB of RAM. I had the case open and when I looked, the drive racks/shelves/whatever are directly above the slots for the RAM. So, I tried my best to get the RAM in but I can't get the side that is under the disk drives completely in. What can I do to get the stick in there? lol (It's my first time doing this, and yes...it's really easy, BUT I can't see the other side of what I'm doing so that makes it a little difficult.) My mom may ask my cousin's bf to do it, but I want to know anyway.

Thanks!

some cases allow you to remove the drive cage. that involves a lot of work but hey it's fun to unplug all that junk and then try to figure out where all the cables go ;)

will the ram fit at all? i know how it is to work on cases that have no room.. ala HP's heh.. does the can u unscrew the drive bays? or are they jus welded into the case? if nothing else, you could take the motherboard out, if ur comfortable doing that, and install the ram that way... well good luck..

i've been there lots of times...GOSH, i really hate poorly designed cases

anyway, with them all, there IS a way to remove the drive cage, etc..but it's usually not pretty, and you can expect to get

1) frustrated and
2) cut (i.e. bleeding)

but you WILL be able to get that RAM in there!

I suggest taking a saw to the drive cage to get it out. Once it's out, you can take a hammer and take your anger out on that RAM. Those pesky little clips should just fall right into the slots in the RAM. This way, you know that the RAM is in the board.

;)

<< ala HP's heh >>

Yup. Her's is an HP. lol

I looked at unscrewing the drive bay, but I'm chicken. lol If it was my computer I might do it, but if I screw up my mom's...I'm screwed. lol I am going to take classes to get A+ certified, but I haven't yet. I'm still really new to it all, but I'm willing to try. lol I thought that it was really easy until I looked at where it was situated. :|

EDIT: Oh, I'm supposed to ram the RAM into place! ;)

Fancy seeing you here hzl_eyed_grl

Have you tried removing all the drives and all?? It's a bitch to do but you can't force the RAM in.

Well, I'll prolly be over at her house again tomorrow. I will try to remove the cages. lol We'll see what happens. If it doesn't boot back up I'll just tell her it's all your fault!! ;) Heehee

ya... i have worked ona few HP's. The only problem with the drive cage is that there is usually a hidden screw, that is easy to miss. on the ones that i have worked on it was under the faceplate on the right side.

Thank you for your help guys. If she wants me to, I can try to do that tomorrow. I'd like to be able to do it. I'm just afraid of screwing something up. lol Like unplugging something and forgetting where to stick it when I am putting it back together. :Q  lol

Just line up the pins with the holes and you'll be fine. This could build your confidence.

Now that you all give me confidence, I'll prolly end up going in there and taking everything out. When I put it together I'll prolly have a few dozen "extra" parts that the system mysteriously didn't "need" any more. ;) Heehee

I also have a crap HP case. It's ez to do. Unscrew 2 screws..one at the top of the drive cage and one near the front end then pull the little tab on the top towards u and push the cage forward so it almost comes out!

Well.... I called my mom last night. Before I left her house, I showed her what I was doing and where it went. When I called her she was happy because she finally got it to go in. lol My mom! Go hzlsmom. Heehee I just couldn't get in there to do it so I was going to go over today to take the drive bay/cage/thingy (;)) out. But, now I don't have to. :D

Thank you all for your help though. I appreciate it. :D
