RAM upgrade for Toshiba M60-BK3 Centrino (PSM60C-BK300E)

Hello
I've just purchased newest model of Toshiba laptops:

Model: Toshiba M60-BK3 Centrino (PSM60C-BK300E)
CPU: Pentium M 750 1.86GHz
RAM: 512 x1
Screen: 17" WXGA TFT W/ TruBrite
HDD: 100GB 4200RPM
Optical: DVD +/- RW & CD-RW drive
Video: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600 With 128MB DDR Dedicated Video Memory
Cache: 32k L1 2MB L2
Fax
LAN: 10/100; Wireless 802.11ag (Centrino model)
Bus: 533MHz

I am wondering if I need to worry about upgrading the RAM.
I am new to the laptop scenario. This laptop will be used as a home PC mostly (I am getting rid of my desktop Sony VAIO, Pentium III, 700Mhz, 20GB HD)
Opinions and comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks! 😎

Nice specs. I would say that picking up an extra 512MB stick, since your configuration is coming at 512x1, for about 60 bucks certainly wouldn't hurt performance.

The only other cool thing you could do would be to pick up a PentiumM 735 1.7ghz processor and pinmod it to run at 2.26ghz, but I wouldn't reccomend that unless your an expert at taking laptops apart and such.

And if you do take it apart, please take detailed pics of your 6600 Go and email them to me, thanks!

You need DDR2 533. Personally I would get a 1GB stick since you're occupying both slots now. If you get a 512MB then you will have to ditch one of the sticks to upgrade beyond that

Nice system

how can I find out whether i need ECC or Non-ECC type?
I have looked at the prices on e-bay for SODIMM DDR2 RAM and it seems like the newest RAM type is not available there yet, i.e. e-bay has simmilar RAMs by Kingstone part # KVR533D2S4/1G and Toshiba specifies RAM with part # KTT533D2/1G type for my laptop. I wonder if there is real difference between this 2 kinds?

Get Non-ECC. It's useless for anything but the most crucial server settings. I have the same system and love it. The HDD is a bit slow (defraging is a pita)

Assuming I get an additional stick of 512 (instead of a 1G since it's a lot of money), would it be best to buy the Toshiba RAM or get a stick of say Corsair or another brand?

I've got a reply from Kingston on my question on compatibility of KVR type RAM with my laptop, and here it is:
"Kingston's ValueRam (KVRxxx) is designed for "white box" systems and are not recommended to be used in "branded" systems so I am unable to advise you as to whether a KVR part will work in your system. If you find the specifications of the KVR part you have provided match those required by your system, then the memory may work. "

E-bay store that have only Kingston's RAM part # KVR533D2S4/1G answered to me that KVR?.is the same as far as specs of RAM part # KTT533D2/1G.

Can anybody confirm that KVR533D2S4/1G indeed have the same specs as KTT533D2/1G ?
Thanks

based on the information i'm seeing from a small amount of research, both sticks are reported to be DDR2 533MHz sticks, with 200 pins. If this is true, then they are virtually the same memory modules, with a slight variation in appearance and maybe who actually constructed them.

Hey all - I have this Toshiba M60 as well - my memory was supposed to be 1 x 512 PC2700 (333) - I know that it can do the PC4200 but before you purchase another stick be sure that it is a PC4200 (533) or the speed will default to the lower one.
On another thought - I having a bit of concern with the Touchpad - I believe it is suppose to have Vert and Horiz scrolling but mine won't and I can't find the utility to tune it. Am I being dumb? That corner sensing thing too rarely works - any clues people or is thing defective? thanks

I was unaware of that feature, and I don't see any mention of it in the mouse/touchpad applet. The corner sensing util was extremely irritating and sensitive, I disabled it as soon as I figured out what it was. Defective? Doubtful, it's a good touchpad, I think that the util is just crap. Ditch it, way more trouble than it's worth.

the Vert and Horiz scrolling works just fine on my laptop.
The utility to adjust it is located at Control Panel and called Mouse. Go to Advanced tab and click on Advance Feature Settings and adjust all what you need.

Yes after checking the user manual and rechecking the utilities there is no indication - I may not have the right software installed - gonna do the research now - just needed to know if it was me or was it built that way. Touchpad works well as it is though. Toshiba is reliable - I'm sure its nothing. Funny that Toshiba is slowly eroding away to other laptops like Dell and HP - they are the more 'popular' laptops - not necessarily better. Toshiba needs to advertise much more they are too much quality to be sidelined. By the way - HP, Compaq, Dell, IBM, Gateway etc are all built by a single Tiawanese company - only the shell is different but the parts are configured and assembled under one roof. Toshiba, Sony and Fujitsu combined brings us the quality of a Toshiba Notebook - interesting mix of friends and foes.

All good again - I get the scrolls and disabled the corner thing. Was in the MCONFIG settigs - been turned off . As soon as I reset it, voila! suddenly I get choices in my advanced again - patience I guess. Later

I also have the M60 and so far love it. Am I able to buy a 5400 RPM HD and replace the stock 4200 RPM drive? Or will the system not support a 5400 RPM drive?

Hey Stobes - I believe a 5400 is alright - there is not much in the way of hard drives that it can not accept - if it has compatible notebook connections that is. Most of them are standardized to fit anyhow. This machine was undermemoried ( if thats a word ) it deserves 1 GB as a standard - my next buy is a SODIMM. I hay hgave to get it up to its 533 bus limit as well! Later

Hey there

I will be buying this laptop soon, but would like to ask you if have experienced any problems with it since purchasing it?..

any input would be greatly apprciated!

Cheers

Karl

Hey Karl - Its a good buy but I would consider another stick of SODIMM at 512 mb to get it up to a comfortable 1 gb. I have one dead pixel and thats all I can complain about. I love this thing Video is awesome, its wireless is excellent and it is a Toshiba, of course. Need I say more 🙂

Hey Karlz

Beefed up is right 20 more GB on the Harddrive, 128mb more on the Video, slightly faster CPU - but the mem still has 512 weird - we all think it should be 1 GB as a standard. Its a great machine - enjoy!

Has anyone here upgraded the mem of their machines yet?
Cheers

Hmm, this one got lost in the shuffle. I for one haven't upgraded anything yet, things got too busy and then just plain forgot. Karlz, very nice setup. I think you'll find the 5400 drive to be a bit more tolerable, the 4200 is death. No real problems with the unit, just every once in a while it seems to get stuck "on" when you try to go to standby or whatever, blank screen but green and blue power lights. Have to pop the battery to do anything. But that's once in a blue moon, possibly a Windows thing? Wouldn't surprise me.

I see no reason why a 5400 drive couldn't be installed, unless I'm mistaken the speed is irrelevant to the computer, but more a matter of power consumption and heat. Might be a more worthy upgrade than RAM for those of us with the slower drive.
