RAM timings on Kt266A - 2-5-2 vs. 3-6-3 = same memory score? WTH?

Hi there, My FTP/Fileserver uses a Shuttle AK35GTR mobo (KT266A chipset) and PC2100 ram. No overclocked anything. The Crucial memory is rated at CAS2.5, but I have always run it at CAS2 with no probs.

I've had the timings maxxed at 2-5-2 (CAS2). I ran the SANDRA memory benchmark and got 2038/1939. Pretty decent!

I changed the timings to 3-6-3 (CAS2) and got 2030/1921....well within the "margin of error." What the heck is going on? Normally, chaning timings makes a BIG diff. Could it be the fact I'm running W2K Server on my server instead of W2K?

Ideas?

Hi

As far as my personal experience CAS2 won't make a HUGE difference in SANDRA benchmarks. Well certainly not in my OC'ed P4 running 148FSB CAS2. Can't remember the score difference off the top of my head but I don't remember seeing a HUGE difference.

The setting that will make the most difference is the Command rate 1T... with that setting enabled I score 2187/2042 with my Shuttle AK31 3.1.

Thanks guys.

Assuming I don't run the RAM by SPD, b/c I like to run it at CAS2, do they timings make a huge difference in performance AFA a SERVER goes? I.E. FTP/File server? Box also is doing DNS/DHCP. Thanks!

No, for a server you are usually fine with a 486-pentium or so, unless you have hundreds of users.
