Ram timing strangeness with asus a8r-mvp

I have old corsair 3200llpt which is rated to run at 2 - 2 -2 - 6 at 200 mhz... i'm running at 296 htt with a 2:3 divider (i think, memory is running at 190 mhz) Problem is, i can't loosen the timings w/o a a mobo failure. i tried 3 - 4 -4 - 8 a few times and every time not only did the thing fail but asus CPR didn't work and i had to clear my cmos manually which requires me taking out the video card which is annoying, so befor ei try it again, what am i doing wrong

PS, i have the ram set to auto which results in 2 2 5 8 setting. I'm trying to find out if i can push HTT higher.
