RAM the limiting factor for OC-ing?

Hi folks,

I've got this 1.5 year old AXP 1600+ (1.4Ghz) with 256MB DDRRAM (PC2100) running with Epox 8HKA+. Forgot the CPU stepping as I haven't been tinkering with this CPU ever since I installed it. However, I've tried O/C-ing it some time back to push the FSB to 166Mhz. Unfortunately things didn't work out fine. I could see the bootup screen but memory checking fails every time. If I put the FSB down a bit to around 140-150Mhz, it's ok. Is it safe to assume that the RAM is the limiting factor for the OC?

TIA.

No, beause when you up the FSB to 166 you are overclocking both the CPU and the RAM, there no way to tell what the limiting factor it
Also I don't know what chipset is on the Epox 8HKA+, but you could also be overclocking you PCI/AGP to high...this could be very bad for you Harddrive and Video/PCI cards...
you can try add some volt to the cpu/ram and see if that helps, but I would make sure you not overclocking you PCI/AGP to high

Hope thats helps

Yes,

That ram is only rated for 133...

Chances are that CPU can handle at least 100-200 mhz overclock.

Get some PC 3200..

I agree...but I would probably guess that the motherboard might not be able to use it to it's full potential. Might just settle for some good 333 stuff...If all you want is 166FSB...

PhoenixOfWater: IIRC, the 8KHA+ can handle 166Mhz w/o breaking a sweat based on other pple's experience. As for the AGP/PCI clock, it's at 33Mhz when FSB is at 166Mhz, so it shouldn't be too bad.

bjc112: Will PC2700 suffice? PC3200 is outta my budget :(

Mickey21: I'm trying to figure out a way to NOT spend too much money on "upgrading" my PC :p

Kingston for sure...

BUT STAY AWAY FROM VALUE RAM.

You figure the Hyper X 2700 will do 185 FSB almost no prob..
