Looking for input on RAM for OC'ing a Opteron 146 with a EPOX EP-NPA+ Ultra mobo. Would like to be in the $150 +/- range.

Not looking for greased lighting right now - just like to get to 2.5 or 2.6 GHz stable. If I could see some big performance increase for a relatively little amount of cash (i.e. +$25 to $50) I would consider it.

Thanks.

with memory, there is huge performance diminishing returns, i.e. valueram is the best imo because after that memory gets very expensive and performance doesn't make up for it. (between valueram and xms there is a average 2% performance gain)

Better off saving that money for upgrading your vga card(that's all that really matters with gaming) or maybe getting a zalman for your cpu(or zalman for vga card :)))).

I'd go with more memory vs a name brand. G.Skill is very good however, and many people have excellent results using it.

I've got it in my system right now doing 280x10 with the 183 divider on stock timings and 2.6V

My friend - you must be a psychic - I purchased just that kit about two hours ago (before I read your post). The A-Data kit looked interesting, but for an extra 40 bucks I decided to go with the G SKill PC 4000. I looked at reviews and forum comments everywhere, and the general consensus was that they are real good sticks and constituted a good value.

Can't wait to take them and the Opteron out for a spin.

A word of warning strummer, they are real fiddly to OC. The SPD are 3-5-5-10 so you have to manually change this to 3-4-4-8. There's a lot of sob stories going around about disappointing overclocks, mine included. I couldnt get mine stable at 275-280MHz & I couldnt get TCL 2.5 to be stable at 229MHz. At least you will definately get 1:1 at 250MHz & most likely at 260MHz. Above that its hit or miss. I'm still pleased with mine and found that after some tuning of the timings, I lost very little benchmark performance from my previous 2x512Mb kit. Best of all, I could play FEAR without the stuttering I was getting when the page file usage was at 1.4Gb.

EDIT: I also meant to say to keep the voltage down on these. I started off at 2.8v but found that my stability improved when I lowered to 2.6v.

I'm running my kit now @ 2.5 VDimm using the stock 3-4-4-8 timings @ DDR500. Running as cool as cucumbers. I like it.
