Solved! RAM speed without OC on B450/X470 Motherboard

I have com across these specs from both Gigabyte and MSI web-sites on RAM speeds on their motherboards, Tomahawk B450 and Aorus X470 Ultra gaming:

I can't understand what exactly is the meaning of those specs. Does it mean this:

  • for b450, if you buy 3200 MHz RAM but don't overclock it, you will get max speed of 2667. To get the original speed of 3200, just overclock it to some value and then you will get original 3200 ?
  • for X470, max you will get is 2933 even if RAM is 3200 MHz. Overclock like above to get the original RAM speed

Am I getting it wrong ?

Top pic will auto clock up to 2933 but can go higher through XMP.
Bottom pic will auto clock up to 2667 but can go higher through XMP.

In general if you are not building a bleeding edge system most of the performance you can 'feel' comes from SSD, CPU and GPU, RAM speed is a distant 4th.

I don't build AMD systems but in general the advice you see most places is that DDR4 3200 from a reputable brand is a solid choice for a modern build.

The definition of "memory overclock" is a bit bogus with DDR4 because the standardized JEDEC speeds only go up to 2666 MT/s. Anything faster is technically an overclock.

For AMD motherboards, if you use memory that's on the memory QVL that says they guarantee running at X MT/s, it is supposed to do that. Otherwise it's a matter of probabilities and luck. With the latest BIOS updates, Ryzen is much less finicky about memory than it was when first released, so if we're talking about 2x8GB sticks, both motherboards have an excellent chance of running at 3200 MT/s or very close to it. If the memory isn't on the mobo QVL, though, you can't be guaranteed anything.

My 3000MT kit (hynix ICs) is on QVL (gigabyte mobo) but will absoulty not run at this speed using XMP profiles. Tried manually setting latencies and voltages and still no dice. Most i got out of them was 2800MT using stock lantencies.
