RAM speed & it's compatibility with the motherboard.

I have 3 questions:

If I have an old motherboard that supports slow DDR 1 RAM (let's say the manual says it takes up to 266 mhz ram). Can I use IN ALL CASES a brand new DDR 1 400 mhz ram?
In few words I'm asking if the maximun speed that the manual indicates for the ram is just for the time the MB was out and all faster memories are comptatible.

And what about the opossite case: a brand new PC that can take 400 mhz ddr 1 ram... can I use a 266 mhz piece?
So, can I use legacy DDR ram on a new PC?

The last one, does ddr 2 works the same way?
