RAM Speed and SETI

Here's an interesting tidbit. I just upgraded my best system from a P4 2.0a@2640 (132 fsb) to a 2.53@2831 (150 fsb). When at 132 fsb I was able to set my BIOS on my P4B266-C to 3:4 for the RAM which put it at 351 MHz DDR. Now that I'm at > 132 fsb my BIOS won't let me select the 3:4 option, so now my RAM is at 300 MHz. My Corsair RAM was set to SPD at 132 fsb which is CAS 2-3-3-5T, since I'm running slower I changed it to USER at 2-2-2-4T (most aggressive possible).

The irony is my SETI times are IDENTICAL despite a ~200MHz cpu core increase and more aggressive RAM timings. Losing that 51 MHz in RAM speed is HUGE! SETI likes super fast RAM.

That & the P4 needs every MHz of bandwidth😉

ah heck! a nice upgrade but no faster WU's 🙁
You'll just have to overclock it more 😉😀

hehehehe...I had it upto 2.950 (155 fsb) but Q3 would crash right away. I'm at 1.600v right now and don't really want to go any higher. The current speed is the trade-off for 100% stability in Q3, everything else seems to be fine at 2950, but I'm a hardcore Q3 Excessive player....that's my most important app, hehehehe.

That's why I take memory MHz over CPU Mhz 😀

I had my CPU @ 2.7
but because I only have regular DDR333, I can only run the CPU @ 2.3, but the memory is at 333 unlike before (300) and times are very similar. I just ordered some Kingston HyperZ PC3500 so I can run the memory at 400+ 😀

Now that I have more data, I see the system is about 2-3 min faster with the new cpu. I need a new mobo so I can run my ram faster, hehehe.

Yea, the P4 don't do to well unless it has at least 400Mhz on the memory buss, I've seen folks running the 2.8Ghz P4's with ddr 333 cas2, runnig a bit slower than my XP2000+ ddr333 cas2.5 I was getting 2hr50min WU's on it(will again when my rma'd proc gets back), most of the 2.8 P4's I've seen are running just under 3hr WU's with those mem timings. I think a lot of it has to do with the mathmatical nature of seti, the athlon still has a vastly superior floating point unit.

I wonder how well a nice fast Athlon with dual channel DDR400 would fair? That produces something like 6.4gb/second.

I wouldn't say "it doesn't do well". My average over 1000 wu's is 2:40 and with the new cpu it looks like it will be about 2:38.

Nice 😀

Now if I can unlock my XP1600 successfully & get at least 1.75GHz I know it will do 0.417 WU's in 2hrs 50mins ish 🙂
