RAM questions:

What would be the down side to using PC133 CAS3 RAM in a system that runs a 66MHz FSB? I am finding it almost impossible to find a 256MB DIMM module of 66MHz RAM (albeit, at a reasonable price). So far I am having no ill effects with PC133 on a i810 mobo in a BookPC (66MHz FSB). {I got a good deal [$89 each] on 128MB PC133 DIMM back in MAY.}

Also, what type of problem could I expect if I would mix PC100 and PC133 modules on the same (440BX) mobo ?

TIA

That's backward compatible Eddie. The only downside is that system will never see the capability of the ram. 😉 Mixing wont matter either, as the system is not any faster than it's slowest module, so no problem there.

The downside is the dough. 256 MB of PC133 is bound to be more expensive than 256MB of PC100 RAM, which would be more expensive than 66Mhz RAM (if it could be found). Like Compuwiz said, there would be no performance issues, since RAM can go slower then it's clocked without problems, but (generally) not faster, so essentially you're paying for the faster speed of the RAM, (the extra speed) which can't be utilized by the system.

It's like buying a car which can do 130 MPH, but you live in a town where the speed limit is 65.

Thanx gents. With the way RAM prices have been bobbing up and then down, not too many online vendors are stocking the larger RAM modules. The bigger outfits (Crucial, Mushkin, etc) seem to be holding prices or not reducing then as fast as some of the vendors that aren't manufacturers; I have good experiences with a couple smaller vendors that have a limited inventory and the prices are about 20-30% lower. Currently I have found that I can buy name brand 256MB PC133 for less than I can get 128MB PC100. I have an i810 mobo with only 2 DIMM slots and want to run 384MB, so I need both a 256MB and a 133MB board.

HEheh...I have 4 128MB modules...Kingston, Pny, and 2 generic I believe....

One is ECC PC100 cas2
one is non-ecc PC100 cas3
one is non-ecc PC66 cas?
one is non-ecc PC133 cas3

All the units run just fine at 133, cas3....when I was running an overclocked celeron

Now, I run all in my Abit BX6r2 (BX Board) at 100mhz mem-bus @ CAS2 (2:2:2).

My two pesos....
